His rant was familiar as a Gopher fan but it is annoying that he never entertained the idea that we have some talent.

There seems to be that ignorance about it. Sounds like his family knows to not even discuss football with him.
It's like with us playing WI this week. I know WI has a freshman QB who has looked really good or really bad. If he plays well, he could throw for several TD's.
I know WI defense is really good. They could shut us out. I hope they don't but if they do, I would be able to say... Well, we tried running the ball, but WI defense is tough!
It would probably help him a bit to rationalize these things.
