Women's Hockey 2023-24 Season -- Part 2: The Regular Season

Power-play goals by Emma Kreisz and Ava Lindsay helped the Gophers women's hockey team rally for a 3-1 victory over Bemidji State on Saturday in Bemidji.

The victory was the 22nd in a row for the Gophers over the Beavers. The No. 5-ranked Gophers (18-5-1, 12-5-1 WCHA) defeated the Beavers (3-20-1, 2-16) 2-0 in the series opener on Friday. The Beavers' last victory in the series was Dec. 2, 2017.

Khloe Lund's goal with 12 minutes, 48 seconds remaining in the first period gave the Beavers a 1-0 lead.

Kreisz tied the score, on assists from Madeline Wethington and Lindsay, with 3:28 remaining in the second period.

Lindsay's goal, assisted by Wethington and Kreisz, in the first two minutes of the third period gave the Gophers the lead. Josefin Bouveng's goal with 5:44 remaining extended the Gophers' lead to 3-1.

Gophers coach Brad Frost missed the series because of a medical situation. Frost is expected to return for next weekend's home-and-home series vs. Minnesota State Mankato. Associate head coach Greg May filled in for Frost.

Let's look around college hockey. I already wrote about the WCHA.

ECAC

Several top teams play in the ECAC. Colgate and Clarkson are very strong this season. Next in line, St Lawrence is riding a winning streak. Cornell and Quinnipiac are strong, ranked teams.

Michelle Pasichnyk of Clarkson has 6 shutouts this season.

Julia Gosling of St Lawrence is 6th in the NCAA for points per game

Izzy Daniel of Cornell is 2nd in the NCAA in points per game (16 goals, 22 assists). She played high school hockey at The Blake School in Minneapolis.

Hockey East

Boston College is a surprise team. Northeastern was the favorite entering the season.

Gwyneth Philips of Northeastern is #3 in the NCAA for saves %

New England Women's Hockey Alliance

LIU in first place is the favorite to represent the conference in the NCAA Tournament, for the second season in a row.

College Hockey America

Morgan Neitzke of Lindenwood is 4th in the NCAA for goals per game (21 total, .88 per game). She played high school hockey in Michigan that has no NCAA D1 hockey program -- shame.

And then some other conferences.

MIAC Division III, including defending champions Gustavus

American Collegiate Hockey Association (and now it gets complicated because it's non-NCAA, D1 and D2, hundreds of teams)

Click the link. It’s interesting to see so many teams scattered across North America, including Arizona and Virginia, including teams like United States Naval Academy.

Yeah, there's a University of Minnesota non-NCAA woman's hockey club on that list. U of Minnesota has two women's hockey teams. Delaney Johnson has 18 points.

Other Gophers players have been finalists for the award, including most recently 2022-23 Gophers graduate Grace Zumwinkle who was nominated twice.

For 2024, Minnesota's Abbey Murphy is a contender. Finalists haven't been announced.

Kendall Coyne Schofield of Minnesota PWHL was the first to compete at the NHL all-star game when she speed skated against men of the NHL. She's fast. Her time was about average for the group, and she did not finish last.

She will represent PWHL at the upcoming NHL event.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau attended the Ottowa-Boston game, generating media buzz and his support.

Ella Huber scored first on a Peyton Hemp rebound. Josefin Bouveng also on the assist.

Lackluster performance against BSU last weekend and it continues tonight. Pathetic.

Gophers won 4-3 on this Abbey Murphy Goal, her 2nd of the game, fed by Ella Huber.

Minnesota State in the 3rd had scored 3 goals in 7 minutes to tie the game, the pucks shot to great places or surprise strikes.

The last month, the Gophers looked less crisp. It looks like they are trying to work that out. Many young players on the team. Gophers started a freshman at center on the first line.

Another win for #5 Gophers.

--------------------

#2 Wisconsin beat #7 UMD by a goal. #1 Ohio State beat #10 St Cloud State. In February, UMD and St Cloud State play each other. Wisconsin to me looks slightly inconsistent, similar to Minnesota. If someone can upset Ohio State in the post-season, anyone could win.

---------------------------

#3 Clarkson fell 0-1 to a surging #9 St Lawrence team. Looks like Gophers this week could pass Clarkson in the rankings. Also keep an eye on this underrated St Lawrence team that "isn't that good."

----------------------------

#8 Quinnipiac fell to #14 Yale in overtime on this power play goal:

----------------------------

#6 Cornell beat up a weak Dartmouth team 14-0. Dartmouth falls to 5-16-2.

Why are we struggling against teams like Bemidji State and Minnesota State? How are you expected to compete against the likes of Wisconsin or Ohio State when you play like we've been playing?

Peyton Hemp's overtime goal lifts Gophers women's hockey to 2-1 victory at Minnesota State Mankato

The Gophers didn't need long in the extra session to sweep the home-and-home series.

Peyton Hemp scored in the first minute of overtime to lift the Gophers women's hockey team to a 2-1 victory over host Minnesota State Mankato on Saturday.

The victory completed a sweep of the home-and-home series for the fifth-ranked Gophers (20-5-1, 14-5-1 WCHA). The Gophers won 4-3 at Ridder Arena on Friday and won all four meetings this season with the Mavericks (10-17, 4-16).

Josefin Bouveng's power-play goal with two minutes remaining in the first period to give the Gophers 1-0 lead.

Minnesota State Mankato's Kennedy Bobyck scored midway through the third period to tie the score. The Gophers outshot the Mavericks 12-3 in the third period.

Hemp, who had a goal and assist on Friday, scored on assists from Abbey Murphy and Nelli Laitenen only 54 seconds into the extra season. Laitenen left a drop pass for Murphy, who in turn fed Hemp for a one-timer right in front of the net.

Skylar Vetter had 15 saves for the Gophers, who outshot the Mavericks 28-16.
The Gophers play host to St. Thomas next weekend.

Wisconsin gets out of a jam, yet again. Wisconsin pulls out the 5-4 win against UMD with four 3rd period goals including two by Lacey Eden.

Last in WCHA
St Thomas is last in the WCHA, trailing Bemidji State.

Worse
St Thomas probably will finish worse than last season - headed in the wrong direction.

Game Winning Goal to Beat Tommies

The preseason hype at St Thomas looks like just hype.

Expect a couple of one goal games because that's what we do.🙄

Clarkson and Colgate swapped spots. St Lawrence nudged up. UMD held despite a sweep to Wisconsin (but almost won).

Cornell BOOMED this weekend with 21 goals in two games.

Bemidji State has two players WCHA Player of the Week. They're a well coached underdog team with recruiting varying season to season, up there in the beautiful wilderness.

Northeastern Huskies won the 45th annual Women’s Beanpot championship Tuesday night.

Time is now for Michigan to have an NCAA Division I team. It's shocking that they don't. So many good players come from Michigan -- a strong hockey state. They're loaded.

Video highlights of the Beanpot Championship. Attendance was 10,000. It was held at TD Garden, home of the Boston Bruins.

I was just ribbing rival St Thomas a bit since they recruit in same areas. St Thomas is a fine school. I like the fun crosstown rivalry. They are trying to raise their sports profile. They will be building a nice sports complex.

The WCHA is a tough conference to climb. To put this in perspective, last season the Gophers played an exhibition game against a pro team, the Whitecaps. The Gophers won. The conference is loaded with medalists.
