All Things TV Series Recommendations/Reviews

We've already established that everything starts and stops with The Wire. It's really just a matter of what someone's second favorite all-time TV series is after that.

Speaking of TV series, has there ever been a show take such a dramatic nosedive as The Office? Loved the show for the first 4-5 seasons, the last season or two with Michael Scott started going downhill but there were still a few funny episodes, but it's gotten just plain bad now. I still watch because I'm hoping for a bit of comedy left in it, and I guess I want to see how the Series ends after this year, but gosh is it bad. It's turned more into a drama than it is a comedy.

Go Gophers!!

For years when asked about my favorite show of all time, The Wire was the instant answer. Every day, all day. The Wire.. period. Then, something called Breaking "fricking" Bad was introduced.. wow!!! I now have a tie for my all time favorite...

Both BB and The Wire are incredible.

Just finished House of Cards and really enjoyed it.

One thing I was surprised about was that Netflix released all 13 episodes at once instead of one a week or something.

Wasn't feeling so well yesterday, so I had a Weeds final season viewing marathon. Just finished the last episode. Not even close to my favorite show of all time, but I will miss Andy. Andy was a great, great character. He had some of the best monologues/speeches/rants I've ever heard.

1. First two seasons of Rescue Me were dramatic but hilarious. Don't go beyond those seasons they were so-so but poorly written.

2. Californication is good - puts David Duciveny(spelling) in a whole new light.

3. Legit - on FX - a 34 year old, me, and 68 year old, my dad, both enjoy it.

4. Duck Dynasty - good family show to watch with younger kids.

I started the Sons of Anarchy series and breezed through Season 1, and am now on Season 2. The first season was great and looking forward to working my way through the other seasons.

The Office is ending this week. What was a fantastic show for the first 5-6 seasons has turned somewhat painful the past few seasons, though the last few weeks have had a mild uptick. The Series Finale is this week and hopefully it finishes strong, though I imagine they'll do much better in syndication if they stick to the first 5-6 seasons.

Go Gophers!!

When Game of Thrones is at its best, there's really nothing like it on television. I don't consider myself to be particularly into the fantasy genre, but I'm full-on obsessed with that show. A serialized, sprawling epic like that is no easy feat.

When is Game of Thrones at its best? The first season good, but we gave up four episodes into the second season. All the mystery and intrigue from the first season was gone. It's basically just pornography at this point.

My question is, do we just need to work through the current slump and it gets better, or is this as good as it gets?

Season two had its slow moments, but I thought it really picked up steam eventually. I think there are some inherent limitations with the pacing and trying to stay true to the books (as much as you could with something like this, anyways). Sometimes this is executed well, sometimes it's not--that's what I meant by when it's at its best. This is a show--and part of this I think can be attributed to budgetary constraints--that has to have several table-setting episodes before a "payoff."

it's all subjective, but I'm very impressed with this show at times.

If you are looking for battles and that sort of thing, you will get a few minutes of that per season, but the budget doesn't allow for much else. Season 2 builds up to episode 9, which many consider the best episode of the series.

Personally, I find the dialogue in Game of Thrones to be excellent and think it's one of the best shows on television.

I'm not looking for battles; I'm looking for mystery, intrigue, story, plot. Season 1 had it. Season 2 so far has no interesting story arcs, or flow, or continuity. It's just a ridiculous way to kill someone, followed by abusive sex, repeat. I know there's a lot to cover to stay true to the books, but they were able to find the balance in Season 1.
I'm not trying to be a prude about the sex & violence. It's just seems forced and over the top compared to fitting within a storyline in Season 1.

My wife and I really enjoy Call the Midwife. It's no Games of Thrones or House of Cards, just really great TV. If you liked Friday Night Lights, you may like this as well. Not that they're at all similar, except that both are feel good shows with likeable characters and interesting, relatable stories. If you need a break from the crime dramas, I recommend giving it a try. Netflix streams Season 1.

Gotta recommend HBO's Bored to Death. Excellent cast with Jason Schwartzman, Zach Galifianakis, Ted Danson, Oliver Platt, Jon Hodgman and other comedic actors of note.
I really want to see Bored to Death. That cast sounds awesome. I think it's in my Netflix DVD queue because they don't have it on Instant.

Anyone watch the Office finale? I thought it was very well done. Funny, silly, serious, sad, touching, etc. Shows usually blow the last episode, but not this time.

Agreed. They made a nice little comeback here recently. Between that and the retrospective, it reminded me that the show was once pretty great and discussed amongst my friends and family often. I still watched but had kind of forgotten that about the quality of the earlier years.

Ditto. The last half of this season had some good moments, and I thought the last two episodes wrapped up nicely. In its prime it was a fantastic show that had quite the water-cooler effect. Michael Scott and Dwight will both go down as two of the better TV characters in a long, long time.

Go Dunder Mifflin!!

I personally thought it sucked. The last few episodes leading up to the finale had been somewhat of a mini-Renaissance for the show, but I thought the last episode was terrible. Why fire Kevin and Toby in the very last episode? Why have Stanley retire to a meaningless life in a sh1tty Florida panhandle town? I get that the theme is that all of them have pointless lives in a pointless office, but they didn't have to be so mean to make their point. And they went from Dwight being a competent but childish fool over the first 8.75 seasons to a conquering hero and adult whose destiny was to be the manager all along over the course of the last 3-4 episodes. Meh.

My favorite tv shows are: Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, Sopranos, Freaks and Geeks, Rome, Six Feet Under, Boardwalk Empire, Friday Night Lights, Deadwood, and Mad Men. I recently started Sons of Anarchy and Homeland and I like both.

I see it completely different. Dwight was destined from very early on to be the manager-even happened in the British version. All he needed was to be in-charge to find himself. I loved the Kevin firing and even Toby. Kevin is better off and would have been fired years ago if not for Michael Scott. Toby gets to redeem himself for a brief moment by being asked to come to the party-otherwise he is still a drip and drips rarely win in life. The Kelly and Ryan scene was funny as hell and the Creed angle was awesome ("Let's do this thing"). The Michael coming back was a bit weird and forced, but the "That's what she said" timing was perfect. Again, I think it had a little of everything.

Go Dexter Morgan!!

It's hard to believe the iconic Saved By The Bell had its final episode 20 years ago today. There isn't an episode I haven't seen at least 10 times and nothing beats a good old Saved By The Bell trivia contest during a road trip.

If you're looking for a quick show to watch while eating dinner or folding laundry, check out Archer on Netflix. The humor can be crass to some, but I think it is smart and the animation style is pretty cool.
