UCLA's Chip Kelly advocates for single Power 5 conference

I was absolutely not.
Maybe Brewster did some things, would not surprise me.

In Fleck’s regime, there has never been a single person who has offer a recruit any amount of cash to grease the wheels of their consideration of joining the Gophers football team.

I don’t believe it for a second and won’t short of hard video evidence.

let 40 or 50 schools break away that want unlimited NIL money.

Keep gophers out of those 40 or 50 schools. Im fine with that.

Give us college football back

The problem is how do you pick 64 teams. Someone will be left out. Maybe you make each school give a commitment of money and you only take the schools that do. Could end with more than 64 that way.
Total number of P5 teams is 68 so finding 64 isn't a problem.

Chip has a great idea, but it does nothing to handle the two biggest issues.

1. The TV networks claw on college football financial interests
2. See problem #1

Bags/NIL is all about getting player X, Y, Z to come to your school. Get them in the door, in the first place.

It’s never been about rewarding players for great play.

You can do that with salary, just as well if not better.

And with salary, Gophers actually can offer the money. We have no bagmen and never have.
You don’t think the gophers have EVER had a bagman?

Bleed won't come out and say it, but certainly wants people to think it.

Why? Who knows.

a department like MN would be paying over $20M in wages to students if they meet their claimed in-season 40-50+ hour workload number before adding in the $millions in scholarship costs, benefits, retirement chip-in.
How are you figuring $20M? Truly just want to know the back of the envelope calculations you're doing for that.

- Scholarships
Nope, gone. You earn a wage, then pay for tuition yourself. There will be no scholarships.

- Benefits
Nope. Don't have to give benefits to part timers.

- Retirement
See benefits.

And if needed, then make new law. Special carve out for full-time student employees. They don't deserve to be treated like real-world folks. They're students. They're still in make-believe world before they get to the real world of the working stiffs. For that, your wages are capped at 20hrs a week, no matter how much you voluntarily choose to work, and you get no benefits or retirement.

Anyone can support that. Being a student is temporary. It's not a career. It's not something you support a family with.

Wrong.

Everyone has lost their minds. Literally like sheep. That old saying is still true.

College players should not be paid. Period.
Teams should do whatever it takes to win, at all costs.

And Ohio State and Texas will just share their money with Syracuse and Kansas State?

Willful disregard of real world free market forces will not save you. Everyone is pretty fat and happy right now. There is a reason (or more accurately many reasons) colleges have uniformly come out against these proposals. Beware what you wish for, you just might get it.

Bleed won't come out and say it, but certainly wants people to think it.

Why? Who knows.

I'm not going to name names, we saw this week that a single rumor on a message board leads to media coverage. That's not fair to the coaches. But you apparently need video evidence to believe it anyways, which is your choice.

Go Gophers!!

Teams should do whatever it takes to win, at all costs.
I would seriously suit-up Vikings players for the Gophers. Or other pros. Guarantee a National Championship.

If the other team refuses to play us...sue in court for a forfeit.

But I wouldn't waste my money or time paying kids. And I do have to draw the line on principles somewhere...paying students is a mockery.

The best solution is to form a real college league with other teams who don't pay the players.

I like when coaches come out and propose solutions. It sometimes validates what people are thinking and want. I still think that it doesn't need to be football only under Kelly's idea. If you break the 64 into 8 team divisions and you play your division that's 7 protected rivals.

Football 12 games with seven division/rival games 1 G5 Game, and 4 cross-over games.
Basketball 31 games with 14 division home and home, 17 other games
Volleyball 28 matches with 14 division home and home, 14 other matches

That's why P2 makes sense
Big Ten = NFC or Northern Conference 32 teams
SEC = AFC or Southern Conference 32 teams

These 64 play by rules where NIL and $$$ controlled by the schools and there is a commissioner.

NIL can never legally go away.

Why do people keep talking about solutions that involve no NIL?

It's here to stay forever. Get over it.

Whatever new system people want must include NIL.

The thing is, the current way "NIL" is being used has absolutely no relation to the original court-approved concept of an amateur athlete being compensated for the use of name, image and likeness. At some point, this will be tested in court...not sure when or how, but it will.

So if there is a single conference there will still probably be a need for divisions. So you could take the western most schools on the Pacific Coast, maybe 10 of them, and call it the PAC 10, then maybe take, I don't know, 10 Midwest schools and put them together and call it the Big Ten. Same with Southeastern schools, call it the SED.

On a serious point, I think it's probably headed in some form of this anyways. FBS is basically two divisions alredy at this point. When half the sub-division is basically set on a higher pedestal, it's hard to consider them equals. College football in reality is basically five divisions:
  • Power 5 - Division 1
  • Group of 5 - Division 2
  • FCS - Division 3
  • Division 2 - Division 4
  • Division 3 - Division 5
As for the money situation, I think NIL is here to stay, players getting to be in commercials and such is going to be around. What I'm wondering is how paying players would be decided, if it would be a flat rate to play or if each school could decide. Tough to see exactly how that would play out.
I think you are spot on with your observations of divisions.

Would be nice for the NCAA to just acknowledge that Group of 5 is not and will never be actually considered the same as Power 5. I really think the NCAA could do the Group of 5 and FCS a solid favor by adjusting the scholarship limits. I believe FBS is 85, FCS is 65, and D2 is 36. Would be awesome to see FBS Power 5 at 85 and Group of 5/FCS at somewhere between 65-85. I think you would see a very competitive and fun level of football.

Yep, and would be awesome if they controlled the scheduling of non-conference games similar to the NFL.

NIL can't be controlled. It's restraint of trade.

Wrong.

It's not their call. They are being sheep in the way that anyone who follows the law is a sheep.

Controlled in that it would run through the school and the school would have to report on it.
I still don't know if that would hold up in court. It essentially would mean giving up one's rights to the schools.

It's not different than the collective. The individual would still be able to go out and get NIL on their own.

There are currently 16 SEC and 18 big ten.
I’m not sure 64 makes sense. Don’t think there are 30 teams left that generate revenue:
Notre Dame
North Carolina
Virginia
Colorado
Arizona state
Utah
Florida state
Clemson

Willful disregard of real world free market forces will not save you.
Market forces? Huh??

What market forces dictate the NFL salary cap and restrictions on how much rookies can make, and that they have to go whichever team drafts them to start?

That’s … socialism. Marx himself couldn’t have drawn it up any more perfect.

And, in this very very narrow context, it works flawlessly.

I'm not going to name names, we saw this week that a single rumor on a message board leads to media coverage. That's not fair to the coaches. But you apparently need video evidence to believe it anyways, which is your choice.

Of course you shouldn’t name names, nor do I or anyone else want you to.

You could however come out unequivocally and say something like:
“I have intimate knowledge that an individual, who had zero official connection to the U or any of the football staff, offered a football recruit cash in the hopes of influencing their decision to commit to Fleck’s team”.

Guessing you won’t do that though.

NIL can't be controlled. It's restraint of trade.
You work for Microsoft. You suddenly had an epiphany on a new piece of code that would enable an unprecedented revolutionary feature on mobile phones.

Microsoft owns your idea. You do not. This is legal.

Is that not a restraint on your potential to trade your idea??

Why can’t it be a similar legal concept to that?

All that has to be done is to convince SCOTUS that it can.

The more formal things get, the better it might become for Minnesota

Formality will likely bring some kind of revenue sharing or rules that keep Minnesota from getting crushed. It might usher in a fairer structure that gives us a better chance than the recruit-and-play-for-free era.

Just as long as that formal structure includes Minnesota🤞
