Got lots of helpful ideas last time I sat down with pres. Kaler, so soliciting GH again.

Have him for a while on Monday a.m.

Any out-of-the-box talking points?

Thanks,

Doogs

Some journallist.

I will start, Doogie...

Is there any way President Kaler can get an AD who knows Warren Buffet so as to get that Basketball Practice Facility built, and we can name it Buffet's Buffet.

In a Dan Barriero voice:

In your first major move relevant to sports, you dismissed Joel Maturi, and this was applauded by most. However, we quickly learned, there was a $468K Golden Parachute. This has been received with everything from surprise to outrage to legislative disapproval. Since anyone with a brain knows that the cost is not somehow magically coming from a fund that nobody pays for, but rather is a transparent shell game where one dollar out of that fund is one dollar not used for some more deserving purpose, the move clearly has huge cost. With all this in mind, do you regret this move?

In a Sid Hartman voice:

"President er, uh, umm, anyway er, uh, umm, What did he say, Dave?"

"Thank you, President er, uh, umm, for visiting with us we'll get you a Murray's certificate."

How about. #1 What the hell were you thinking keeping JM around with that kind of salary?
#2 Did it occur to you that with many state residents out of work it might piss off a lot of people giving him close to a half million to be a figurehead?
#3 Was it worth pissing off both parties at the capital to do this?
#4 Exactly what kind of incriminating photos does Joel have?

When does he want a new AD in place? How much input will Kill have in the decision?

It will not be Coach Kill alone, it will be the entire Athletic Department Coaching Staff.

Thanks for asking for our question ideas Doogie.

A few Qs:

- In the time that Kaler has been here and analyzed the job that Maturi has done before Kaler got here and since he's been here, what would Kaler like to see done differently than what Maturi has done?

- Now that Kaler and Kill have both been here for an entire season, what changes can Gopher fans expect in year two with the game day experience at TCF Bank Stadium?

- How important is it for Kaler to hire an AD that has worked at a BCS level school?

- How many men's basketball games has Kaler been to, and what are his thoughts on the fan experience at The Barn?

- Is there a reason to worry that keeping Maturi around will stall any significant changes that the new AD may want to make? i.e., are coaches going to run to Joel to complain, or will other administrators struggle to adjust to new ideas/culture with old ideas/culture still hanging around?

Thanks Doogie - I look forward to your interview.

Go Gophers!!

1) Is Jim Fiore, the current Stony Brook AD, on the short list of serious candidates? Who else are you considering?
2) What are you looking for in an AD ?

Is there presently a sharp culturual divide between the academic and athletic departments? Are there administrative personnel and academic deans that want to see Gopher athletics deemphasized? If so, how do you handle the competing forces? How do you incorporate the athletic department and more specifically Gopher football in the school's mission?

Go Gophers!!

Can we get an AD in here that focuses on the real cash cow - football.

What does Mr. Kaler believe his biggest challenge is in regards to Gopher athletics? Thanks.

DL65's questions please. Stuff on the new AD etc., will result in stock answers.

The U's larger goal, I think, is to be more like UC Berkeley academically. Berkeley, Michigan, Virginia have shown it is possible to have strong athletic departments and academics. We don't have to go the U of Chicago route. I hope the new President believes this.

BleedGopher's question on # of games attended would be interesting.

Do you think, now, Public University's endowment and success in athletics are related?

Thanks

ask kaler if he/the regents will leverage the possibility of the vikings using the U of M's tcf stadium as a bargaining chip during those negotiations with the team and legislature to return control of on-campus alcohol policy to the hands of the U of M regents.

this is an important financial consideration/question that the U of M and gopher athletic fans need answered. on-campus alcohol sales policy MUST be returned to the hands of the U of M regents as soon as possible.

1) We have a 3 year old football stadium that has only been filled to capacity ONCE thus far. The students haven't been showing up, game day atmosphere is nothing compared to what was promised. The tailgate lots next to the stadium are half empty prior to the games, frat row (University Ave) is a non-entity, etc. Only at the very first game, against Air Force, did we come close to what it is like at virtually every other Big 10 stadium on game day. What is it going to take from the University Administration, to the new Athletic Director, to the Head Coach, to make Gopher football relevant again to the whole state of Minnesota?
2) With the two major sports (football and men's basketball) only posting one winning Big 10 season each in the last 10 years, how do you and the new A.D. plan to address and prioritize the new requests for a baseball stadium, new basketball practice facilities, and the possibility of replacing Williams Arena? AND (part 2) are you re-thinking the idea of priority seating for basketball considering the waning interest in that program.
