Dupree McBrayer Commits!

We've covered this point before as alluded to by Madman, but the evidence mounts. Perhaps there was past sentiment among local highly regarded recruits that staying home was "settling." That presumption is no longer valid. The recruiting success and arc of this program clearly indicates Minnesota is on the rise and local recruits can choose to become part of something special. That's how RP can close the deal with Jarvis and AI.

This kid is an ESPN 0 star recruit. Rivals 3*. He looks like he is best suited/can play both guard spots. Jarvis interest in MN is obviously tepid, he had plenty of time to commit here and yet he kept playing the field after Dorsey signed and the U worked other guards. The acquisition of 2 2015 guards plus mason pretty much eliminates Jarvis. The Gophers need to see how the 2 new bigs look before eliminating the need to pick up a 5 next year and bigger 3 would also be nice.

ESPN recruiting services are a joke. My understanding is that a janitor does their ratings on his lunch break. They are never up to date and do not list many good players. 247 and Rivals are exclusive recruiting information services in comparison staffed by people who live and die recruiting.

I'd be surprised if Jarvis and Alex are not the top 2 remaining targets. If we miss on Jarvis, I see us taking a Kipper Nichols type, though Hurt in the class of 2016 may be similar. If we miss on Alex, I see us taking Nwankwo.

Wrong. Jarvis is still a major priority this class. They want 3 guards.

"One college coach recruiting McBrayer said he would be a “nice piece” at the high-major level and a “stud” for a mid-major.

“He has a chance to be a special player,” the coach said. “He’s a lefty who can drive the ball, makes shots, has good size. He’s similar to Josh Pace that played at Syracuse a few years back, but with a better shot.”
"
...
"McBrayer’s future remains uncertain at the moment. He will attend prep school. The details of where have yet to be ironed out, but it will likely be in the Northeast."

I wonder if there is any chance he can play with Dorsey in Florida; maybe Pitino can set this up, seems like it would be great to have them play together a year before putting on the Maroon and Gold....

Boys Basketball: Dupree McBrayer scores 25 and Patrick School repeats as Union County Tournament champions
"I didn't see it coming," Patrick School coach Chris Chavannes said of McBrayer's offensive explosion. "Usually with Dupree, you have to chastise him to shoot the basketball and to be aggressive offensively. One of the problems we had in the two losses to Linden was our guards were back on their heels. We weren't attacking them. That's what we wanted him to do today.

McBrayer, who is deciding to attend a prep school, should be making a decision shortly. Minnesota already has one guard in Kevin Dorsey, who is attending Montverde Academy (FL) for his senior season. A source confirms that McBrayer has committed to Minnesota

This weekend at NERR's annual Super 16 event New Heights NYC guard Dupree McBrayer showed why he is one of the most sought after players on the east coast. With a number of D1 offers to his name look for his smooth jumper, court vision, and ball handling to land him a few more high D1 looks before the end of the summer!

Ryan must not be aware of the fact that the gophers have 13 outstanding offers to none guard prospects.

Why is he going to prep school? Is it academic-related?

+1. It seems like if the elite programs aren't recruiting them, they don't bother finding any info on them. Rivals and 247 are the most complete. If those two see him as a hi 3 to low 4 *. I trust that assessment. Nice get. Its been a great week to be a Golden Gophers sports fan.

Ryan must not be aware of the fact that the gophers have 13 outstanding offers to none guard prospects.

I am having a hard time following the logic here (as admittedly I am not A SCOUT!) but are you saying that:

Given they have thirteen offers out to people who are not Jarvis;
and given that they have only one offer out to people who are Jarvis;
and given that thirteen is a bigger number than one;
ergo, they are not that interested in Jarvis?

Dupree McBrayer Sets College Visits, Planning Prep School Decision
"McBrayer, whose stock has exploded with his play at The Patrick School and with New Heights in recent months, will begin his college tour by tripping to Providence beginning Friday, his mentor, JR Rembert, told SNY.tv by phone.

McBrayer will also visit Seton Hall June 13, Drexel June 18 and Minnesota June 23. They also hope to visit Rhode Island, Creighton and possibly St. John’s, Rembert said.

Why is he going to prep school? Is it academic-related?

Will limit commentary here, but consider the timing of his move from Springfield Gardens HS in NYC to Quest Prep in Vegas... and the move back east to The Patrick School.

At any rate, another year before college will be good for him. Can work on strength and elevating his game (which I already like a lot).

Ryan must not be aware of the fact that the gophers have 13 outstanding offers to none guard prospects.

It is possible that Ryan is more caught up on the idea of Jarvis being a gopher then Pitino. My guess is he fills the spots with quality players holding offers if they are ready to commit and Jarvis is still undecided.

Perhaps it doesn't come to that and Jarvis signs in Sept./Oct.

Will limit commentary here

Thanks, but none would be even better.

Welcome Dupree!
Congrats to the entire coaching staff as well. The hard work is paying off now & will have dividends in the future as well. Love the job they are doing outside of MN. I always want to see MN kids on the roster, but as others have stated they have to want to be there. Glad the staff is making it clear - with or without you.

Go Gophers!

Thanks, Jon! Good info.

Some folks do not understand how the big time recruiting game is played. With Jarvis still lining up visits...he is telling Pitino to not hold his breath. James said nothing about the gophers wanting 3 guards after they signed Dorsey. I believe the gophers would still take Jarvis but recruiting intensity is dialed way down.Other than the gophs willing to take Jarvis the James tweet about wanting 3 guards is absurd. If Jarvis was not a coveted in state kid they would be done with guards. I believe the Gophs picked up 2 guards as good or better than Jarvis. Kudos to the staff for a couple solid out state gets. Time to focus on front line recruiting now.

I agree 100%. Nate Mason is a very solid combo guard and together with Dorsey and McBrayer makes Jarvis much less of a priority. Alex is now the main focus of recruiting and a lengthy wing like Clarke or Grimes should be next in line.

I find this commentary reasonable.

It's important to consider the source of claims. Most everyone has prejudices and leans (e.g., "I like team A so when I talk about them I will point them in a certain light and may embellish good info or hold bad back info), but when someone has clear conflicts of interest, it's all the more important to keep that in mind.

You mean like yours with Marquette?

"Minnesota assistant Kimani Young was the point man on McBrayer's recruitment.
A 6-foot-3 versatile and wiry guard, McBrayer is a terrific long-range shooter. He's also skilled, has an impressive feel for the game and is a very good passer.
Minnesota's backcourt now consists of a pair of four-star prospects"

McBrayer also said the doctors have done x-rays & determined he's still got 2-3 inches left to grow. He's hoping to be 6'6" or so by the time he's done growing.

The main gist of this makes sense. Still reason to hope Gophers get Johnson, but with Dorsey/McBrayer committed he becomes less of a priority. To their credit it appears the staff isn't letting this turn into a Cory Joseph situation (too many eggs in one basket). Focus probably needs to shift to getting big guys (i.e. AI, Nwankwo).

It's one thing for it to make sense to you and me and SCOUT and HOOP DREAMS etc.

But if it makes sense to Pitino to make Jarvis a priority, that's a whole different thing. If Coach thinks pursuing Jarvis is more important than two bigs, that's fine with me.
