Demry Croft commits to Gophers!

great news. Dude can fly! I am pretty excited about this guy. I hope he shuts his recruitment down and we hang on.

Beat me to it. All the moaning and wailing about the Vikings and this kid is pointing out the upgrades taking place to the stadium and the fact that the Vikings are going to play there as something he liked. Bet that will change a few tunes around here about the whole Vikings situation.

Certainly looks like a heck of an athlete. A little surprising though that a 6'5", 200 lbs QB is only really getting MAC offers at this point (assuming of course the list on Rivals is correct). I wonder how legit of a QB prospect he is, maybe more of an athlete, like someone else mentioned, maybe a lot like a D. Jones type.

Can't ever have too many athletes though.

He is a Kill System type QB who should have a RS year plus 2 more as a back up before he is expected to start. Hopefully we are at a point at other skill positions that we can take a kid like this and develop him as a QB and not have to move him to WR out of desperation.

I'm admittedly not in tune with the roster for our football squad. Where do we stand with QB depth as of today?
(I'm butchering names)
Leidner (Sophomore)
Stravalier (RS Freshman?)
We had a couple recruits come in this past class that "could" play qb right? One some thought could have a chance to play right away?

Essentially:
Leidner - RS Soph
Streveler - RS Fr
McKinzy - Fr (will RS)
Perra - Walk-on Fr (will RS)
Croft - HS Senior

In addition, Krizancic (Fr) was recruited as a WR but played QB his senior year in HS and looked damn good at that spot.

Don't forget RS Fr Connor Rhoda...

Moving Jones to WR was the plan all along. The QB opportunity was to get him here. Nothing desperate about it.

I like that he's athletic and can run, but I really hope that he can pass the ball too. This team will not be taking another step forward until they find a QB that can competently pass the ball. Hopefully that QB is Leidner this year, but I will believe it when I see it.

Really hope he's telling the truth. I have a feeling he could blow up his senior season.

100% agree. When I hear someone say he's a potential "program changer," it sounds like hyperbole, but considering the fact that a) he's only played QB for like 10 games, b) he's had an entire off-season to grow and improve, and c) the Gophers coaches (and this 247 guy who made the comment) were among the first to see him perform in person since last November, maybe it's not too preposterous of a statement. Pretty exciting commitment for a kid that one of the major services has ranked as a 2*!

I would disagree on the "next step", we have room to grow as a vanilla run first offense. See Wisconsin before Russell Wilson. Obviously that's not where the end game is, but Wisconsin has a long history of success without having a competent QB. When they DID have QBs with a pulse they went to Rose Bowls which I think is what you are talking about.

Diamond . . . Kill?

'Cause he . . . Seals . . . In . . . Croft?

Sorry.

WAT?! NO WESTERN MICHIGAN OFFER?! BLASPHEMY!

I have tears rolling down my cheeks laughing at your uproarious cynical gem. Keep up the good work. Don't let Gopher fans have any fun. Just pour it on ahole

They also went the year before without Wilson and the year after without Wilson. My point? Wisconsin was REALLY vanilla in 2010 and 2012 and they went to the Rose Bowl with competent (Tolzien) and less than competent (Stave/Phillips) QC play.

Where We've Seen Him: Chicago Elite 11 Regional (2014), Red Grange Classic 7v7 (2014), Game Film vs. Lake Zurich (2013), Highlight Film (2013)
Scouting Report:
Croft, at 6-foot-6, is a taller kid, but he's thin at the moment and must continue to fill out and get stronger. He's a good athlete who can get out of the pocket and make plays with his feet. He does not possess elite top end speed, but is a smooth long-strider who can not only escape pressure, but also take off and run. He can throw on the run and from odd angles and has a good knack for ad-libbing when plays break down. He took good care of the ball, tossing only four interceptions as a junior. He throws a steady, consistent ball, but has to continue getting stronger and improve his velocity. He's a smart kid with good intangibles.
Overall:
The Gophers have had success with mobile quarterbacks before, at least guys who can throw on the move and get out of the pocket. That fits Croft's style and strengths. The big things for him are getting that weight up and getting stronger. Once that happens, he should be ready to compete as he thinks the game and has athletic tools.
