Reid Travis Picks Stanford Over U

On the off-chance that Travis does pick Minnesota or Stanford, is there a Duke chat forum we can lurk on afterward? I have a feeling it will have some good entertainment factor.

Nah they'll be on to their next 5 star recruit. I'm sure Duke fans will tell you that RT is a dime a dozen to them. I just don't think they'll be all too concerned, where as GH'ers would be pretty upset if we lost Travis.

I have a good feeling about this. I just do.

I'm with you. There have been clues along the way which have made me feel positively about our chances with Reid. It's certainly not a sure thing, but I feel like it's a scale tilted in our favor slightly at the moment.

So I checked in with my "source" today about Reid, said that he has informed coach K over the weekend that he would not be attending Duke. In terms of where he is leaning, he is saying that he believes the kid wants to go to Minnesota, but has family members who are really getting into his ear about picking stanford. Said those family members are the biggest obstacle for the gophers chances right now. I will also add that the family was blown away by their Stanford visit, that meeting condoleezza rice was a "surreal moment" for them.

Here is a comment I posted a week ago from my source, figured I would post it, so you guys know that my source is legit.

I know people think its between Duke and Minnesota, but my source(hate saying that but don't know what else to call it) says its down to Minnesota and Stanford, and he also said that it seems like he is a "heavy Minnesota lean right now" with some member/members in the family preference being Stanford (he did not say what members). He said that the Travis family is not concerned with the decision of Looney. Also added that if there were odds on what school a recruit will pick , he would be comfortable putting a significant amount of money on Minnesota being the school Travis picks. Compared it to the odds of Amy Klobuchar winning re-election in 2012. "unless something crazy happens, he will be a gopher"

I will add that I trust this person's word a lot,he is very close to the Travis family, and everything he has told me to date has been accurate regarding Reid and his brother back when he was being recruited

Interesting, thanks for the update.

If the kid wants to come to the U, I really hope his family members are supportive. 18 years old is old enough to make a rational decision on where you want to attend college, especially for a bright kid like Reid.

If Reid chooses Stanford, it has to be largely for academic reasons. They're not better than MN at the moment and Dawkins may not be there in 1-2 years. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but you can't hang that on Pitino.

Duke fans don't seem concerned, they just assume it means they're getting another higher ranked player. (Namely, Okafor, Tyus and Winslow).

Johnny Dawkins has been historically bad at Stanford. Just awful. Took over one of the top programs in the West, a staple in the NCAA tourney for almost 2 decades. And it hasn't been the recruiting, so you can only look at coaching. (He's had at least one 4* or 5* player in pretty much every class). His results have been Tubby-like: best finish in five seasons is T-6, and I can't think of any players he's put in the NBA.

I wonder if the family members urging him to leave are his brother who went to Harvard and cousin who went to Penn St.

As a greedy Gopher fan, I say let the kid decide what he wants to do!!! Of course if I was a Stanford fan, I'd be saying, "your parents know best kid".

In all seriousness, it's a breath of fresh air with how Reid has handled the recruiting process and how he has kept his word that academics will play a huge role in his decision.

Friday and Saturday could be huge days for Gopher sports fans. We could land one of the big 3, open the basketball season with a win over Lehigh, and watch the football team go to 8-2. Friday can't get here soon enough.

Once again, Guy, thanks for the inside word.

I do not blame a parent or family member for thinking that a chance to attend Stanford is an opportunity that their loved one should not pass up. But Reid IS a mature and bright kid, and if he likes Minnesota then Minnesota has got to have a lot going for it. One way or another, I'm glad to hear we're so competitive in a battle where academics are highly valued.

At the end of the day, basketball is important, too - especially for someone with NBA aspirations. I think Reid knows he's going to get the benefit of WAY better development here than there.

I just don't get it. Let the kid play at MN and get his 3 or 4 years and take his shot at the NBA. When his days as a player are done, he can go to Stanford grad school or wherever he wants. If his true desire is business and to live in the cities...then Stanford really doesn't offer him more than the U. You make of college what you want.

Hopefully Dre Hollins is in his hear. He chose MN over Stanford and Harvard and I doubt he regrets it.

For some reason I doubt Ross is going to have a lot of pull, but then again I'm not sure how close he is with his cousins. Would just seem to make more sense that his immediate family members have more impact on his decision. One thing I keep reminding myself is that Reid's dad said he likely would not visit Minnesota, while Reid said he would. The fact that he ended up visiting makes me think that he is in charge of his own recruitment and makes the final decisions. That's what I'm hoping at least.

I'm pretty sure Hollins preferred Stanford but they took a commitment from a different guard and didn't have room for Dre anymore. Regardless, Andre has had nothing but good things to say about how things worked out.

In all honesty, I think it's HUGE news. A lot of people will probably down play it, but he's going to our exhibition game four days before he decides & we got his last visit... That's a lot of face-time with Pitino & gang! THIS IS AWESOME!!!

Great news! There should be an extra buzz in the barn tonight just knowing that Reid is there.

Go Gophers!!

i just heard from my sources at D that Reid will officially not be playing for Duke, Reid called up coach K on sunday and told him he won't be attending Duke, Coach K then called up Thorson to confirm the news and it was confirmed, i don't want to be more specific but i was ecstatic when i heard of this

Guy Fawkes:"So I checked in with my "source" today about Reid, said that he has informed coach K over the weekend that he would not be attending Duke. both of our sources are on the same page so it has to be true

This is the most excited I've been about Gophers basketball since we started last season 15-1... Please god let both of you be right!

How sure are we that Stanford isn't still heavily in the mix? My question would be, why would he go to a gophers exhibition game 4 days before his decision if he weren't a STRONG gophers lean?!

I thought this Twitter exchange was interesting as the second one is from the EYBL folks:
