per Judd:

There is no doubt Fleck’s first year as Gophers’ coach was a disappointment. He took over a program that Claeys had led to a 9-4 finish, 5-4 in the Big Ten, and a victory over Washington State in the Holiday Bowl.

Claeys was fired in part because Coyle could see cracks in the foundation of the program – Claeys was never head coaching material and only got the job because Kill resigned and the school was desperate – and because of a sexual assault allegation that led to dismissals from the team and resulted in an ill-timed tweet from Claeys.

Whether Fleck was the right hire certainly can be debated and there is little question his style rubs some the wrong way. But if he proves he can coach, his personality quirks will be overlooked.

The issue is we won’t know if he can until he is able to recruit players that are worthy of being on a Big Ten roster and can run his system. The end of the season should enable Fleck more time to go about finding that personnel so we can find out whether he’s simply a fast-talker or a guy who can win football games in the Big Ten.

Go Gophers!!

People have gotten so sensitive about Fleck struggling that a "no offense" is necessary, or is it a bad pun?

Apparently our entire returning roster from last year and incoming pipeline downgraded into Illinois talent overnight! Magic! Like we don't have a history of national championships plus TWO 9-win seasons in the past couple of years. SMH.

Woe is us... can you spare us some Big Ten caliber players kind sir??? Full ride scholarship, Twin Cities, Bowl caliber team each year, 40k+ fans each home game, B1G football. Gosh - we just can't seem to find any warm bodies to come play!

Jerry Kill leaves a MAC school that he elevated for Minnesota. The following 4 years, NIU wins no less than 11 games.
Pollyanna John Fleck leaves a MAC school for Minnesota. The rock solid foundation he left clearly shows as a 13-1 team goes 6-6.
No, it wasn't a fluke.

Three of Western Michigan's six losses were one score games. Their record is obviously going to look a lot worse than their underlying statistical profile.

Also, it is definitely worth noting that Dave Doeren was a very good coach who went on to have two eight-win seasons at NC State, so the program remained in good hands after Kill left. Tim Lester is extremely unproven at the Division 1 level and runs a different offensive system from Fleck. His experience as a position coach does not exactly point to any lightning in a bottle, either.

I don't think it's at all surprising that WMU took a step back this year and I also don't think that's an indictment of Fleck's long term plan.

It's gonna hurt like hell when you realize you fell hook line and sinker for a load of baloney. Buy booze now.

Maybe hiring the youngest coach in the nation wasn't such a great idea.

Lincoln Riley is the youngest power five coach in the nation. If you want to go after his youth and inexperience (which is a weird hill to die on considering his four years of HC experience at WMU, but you do you) make sure you have your facts straight first.

Yes second youngest makes it sound much less risky
