26 Mountaineers in portal this year:

"Since the regular season ended, four players have headed into the portal.

We’re not talking about players who have a legitimate complaint about playing time, either. All of the four players started during this season — receiver Isaiah Esdale, offensive tackle Parker Moorer, bandit VanDarius Cowan and tight end TJ Banks.

But that is the tip of the iceberg. Since the start of the season, 11 players have left the team for the portal. Since last year’s bowl game, 26 players have gone through the portal..."

It’s a different world. Don’t know anything about West Virginia coach and this is not an accusation. But the era of the Dickish head football coach is likely over. If your players hate you, the No lost year to transfer rule will cause your program to fall apart.

Been lurking on some of their boards and they don't really know what's up but definitely a concern.

Morgantown, West Virginia, isn’t exactly an urban Eden. Might have an effect on some of the transferees.

Did Kirk have much of a relationship with any players that he could bring over?
Mmmm, 3 of the 4 are offensive players, plus we could use a fast linebacker. Could it be the plan? 😉

They realize the Big 12 is going to no longer be a P5 conference. A lot of others will do the same IMO.

It absolutely will be a P5. One of the incoming teams is in the CFP. Houston and BYU were top 25 teams this year, and UCF just beat Florida in a bowl game. These are all very good, legitimate football programs. You can make an argument that the future Big 12 is better overall than the ACC or the Pac12 in football.

Think money. No one cares about those teams on a national basis (granted I'm pulling for Cincy in the playoffs). This also means no one cares about them from a media stand point AKA minimal money coming in. BYU is the biggest name coming in and they just lost a bowl game to UAB. Oklahoma State was knocking on the CFP this year too, yet not a single conference cared to add them to their league during realignment. Could have been an easy add for the B1G or PAC.

Teams can be successful, but that doesn't mean the conference itself is going to be good. When they play each other, only 1 of those teams at best will be of relevance. The Big 12 will be an afterthought once TV deals are struck and they are left for dead.

TV deals don't mean what they used to in the streaming age.
Neither the B1G or the Pac12 would have taken Ok State because they don't meet the academic standards of those conferences - especially the B1G.

All that said, none of us know what the future holds once the current CFP agreement runs out. The entire thing could be blown up in ways we haven't even anticipated.

exactly this. Coaches who haven't adapted will need to have more of a NFL mentality where players are treated much more as equals and grown-ups than disposable peons once they have signed their LOI. Fleck's first press conference at the U talked about recruiting our own guys every day, and that's going to be critical in the future.

It's a fine line between discipline at a less mature level where a lot of the bad eggs still haven't been weeded out, and having a good reputation as a leader.

They are snagged most of these teams because they happened to be winning right now. So it looks like it will be a competitive conference at the moment. But once they have to start playing each other, the weakness of this conference will begin to be exposed. Less interest, smaller fan bases, poor television ratings, less money invested in their programs, no marquee names once OK and TX depart.

They are not in the same league as the other P5s in any of those things. It will be a long hard road for them to “stay” at the level of even the ACC or Pac12.
