Yes, hiring a coach in February will decimate this program with the free transfer rule.
For a season. But as a sword cuts both ways, a new coach should be able to replenish immediately the next season with the portal.

I'm inclined to say Yes at this point, as much as I'm not crazy about the precedent it sets. I agree with most that say, who in the world are you going to get at this point to replace him? It could set the program back several years.

At a minimum, I would make it contingent upon Fleck shit-canning Wenger from his Special Teams role. This program could/should do so, so much better. The ST, as a whole (barring some bright spots of certain specialists) have been an embarrassment for almost all of Fleck's tenure.
He's no longer on the staff.

I guess I would be interested to know:

of the guys on the spring roster now ... why they would suddenly have a bunch of great transfer options now, that they didn't have a couple weeks or a month ago? Just because Fleck transferred.

He can't take everyone to UCLA.

Incoming recruits obviously a different story.

Weird time for a coaching change ... and to open a 30-day portal for Gophers to transfer out at a time when the Gophers have very little opportunity to "portal in" decent players ... PJ could cherry-pick our best upperclassmen and recruits and take them to UCLA (might have to do a minor version of the Deion purge to existing UCLA roster to make it work). So, I favor keeping him, assuming it means an extension and raise (within reason).

No not after a 6-7 season. I would argue we need to restructure our Assistant contracts first. HC can only be successful with good company at Assistant positions.

I’d favor keeping him, but I don’t think he will be the top choice for UCLA so I don’t think a giant raise is necessary at this point.

LOL.
As insightful as your politics.

PJ has fielded the successful teams in recent history…

I support great coaching. If Fleck is the greatest coach UMN can get, then support him $$$ appropriately. If not, then get a great coach.
For me, the jury is still out on whether Fleck can adapt to the NIL and the amount of $ Minnesota can provide. Last year was not a good look for Fleck.
It would be ironic if Fleck left for LA with a "Row the Boat" mantra after we lost the Lakers to LA all those years back.

I would say yes, we're in the Big 10 and continuity matters. We have Big 10 TV money, should be able to pay our football staff more. As Gopherbadgerman said, raise the buyout.

I don't see how anyone can justify a raise after a five win regular season. Sets a terrible precedent. I'm a huge PJ guy but if he leaves over this, is him being here in the long term worth it? I really don't like the hostage taking mentality and this sets the wrong example in a system that's currently a multitude of falling dominoes of bad examples lately.

Considering his rank in pay compared to the rest of the B1G, I have no problem with a raise. Plus he typically trickles some down to bolster the pay of assistants.

Since he just had a flop season, no.

Let's see if he can survive in the piranha tank called the 2024-25 Big Ten season. If he could finish 9th or better, sure. 10th is hold. 13th is you're canned.

PJ Fleck gets $6 million. Kirk Ferenz of Iowa gets $7 million per year. Fleck has to show Gophers are back in that range of competitiveness, the Iowa-Wisconsin-Minnesota-rivalry range. If he can't hang in that pack, no.

The amount of money in college football is enormous, so the numbers seem crazy. The 10th highest paid coach makes $9 million per year. But if that's what the market is, because the pie gets carved up...

Then why weren’t you clamoring for him to get an extension and raise right after the season?

Duh. He doesn’t deserve one.

Oh but now he should get one because of a rumor? That’s just extortion.

Guarantee he’ll be asked about if he considered taking a UCLA offer, if there was one, and guarantee he’ll give a BS used car salesman answer like:

“Heather and I couldn’t be happier to be in the great state of Minnesota, with the best fans in the country. We are going to focus on being here and working to build the best team that people in this state deserve.”

Guarantee he’ll be asked about an extension/raise, if there is one, and guarantee he’ll give a BS used car salesman answer like:

“You know, all that stuff I don’t really think about or have much to do with. That stuff is between my agent and Mark Coyle. I trust them to work out and do what’s right for the university and the people in this great state.”

????????????????

Assuming he is actually asked those two questions, what would you prefer him to say instead of these so-called "BS used car salesman" answers?

Even just a taste of real truth, would be refreshing

Truth... such as? What, specifically, would you like him to say?

I'm assuming he's staying, and that's what matters. I don't care if he was offered another job. I think he's a good coach, and good coaches occasionally get job offers. That's how the world works.

But, let's say he was not offered the UCLA position. What purpose would it serve for Fleck to say, "Obviously, I was hoping like hell to land the UCLA job, but they didn't make me an offer"?

Purpose?

What do you mean purpose?? What are you getting at?

No one would give a S if that’s all it was.

What matters here is if he and his agent are extorting a raise/extension out of the U based on a rumor, immediately after arguably his most disappointing season here.

You know, for a fact, that Fleck and his agent are "extorting" the U?

MaxyJr posted matter of factly about a shortly coming extension/raise.

I'm hoping that was just an "assertion of desire" thing, and not actual reality.

We will see
