NCAA Tournament Hockey Action Tonight -- Round One

#8 UMD beat #9 HockeyEast champion UConn 1-0. UMD continues the tradition of strong goaltender-defense, except when they get roughed up by Ohio State scorers. UMD advances to face #1 Ohio State.


#7 St Lawrence beat #14 CHA champion Penn State 1-0. St Lawrence now advances to play #2 Wisconsin. That should be a fun game to watch.


#6 Cornell beat Stonehill 7-1. Cornell advances to play #3 Colgate. That should be a good game that generates a lot of interest in New York.

After two periods, Gophers are winning 2-1. Both teams had more chances. Some controvercy.

Minnesota scored on a power play that was waived off as interference. I didn't see any interference. Huber on the rebound poked the puck in. Except her stick appears to glance the upper back of the goaltender before she brings her stick down to poke to puck.

And then Minnesota on a power play was headed up the ice for an attack and a Clarkson player went down. They called the play dead, ending the power play attack. Whatever, a player was hurt so...
 

Minnesota's Franco collided with a Clarkson player who went down, not called. Clarkson crowd wanted a call, not called. Then when play resumed Abbey Murphy got layed out on the ice, she limped back to the bench, not called. Looks like they're letting them play. Gophers still lead 2-1 at 10:00 left in the 3rd.
 

Game goes to overtimes. Not good. Minnesota slightly outplayed Clarkson and should have closed it out. Clarkson tied the game with 2 minutes left. Sloppy goal that probably should have been stopped. Otherwise, Morgan played well.

Clarkson survived a Gophers power play in over time. Still tied 2-2.
 

No score after overtime.

Minnesota looks a little tired. Minnesota had some nice shots. Clarkson's ace goaltender Michelle Pasiechnyk with some strong saves.
 

In double-overtime, Minnesota with a 3-on-1 but can't convert.


Update: A call on Minnesota for an elbow? Looks like Abbey Murphy to the box.

It goes to triple overtime! The game started at 1 PM. It's now 5:11 PM

Commit a dumb penalty and don't defend. Another season of watching either Wisconsin or Ohio State winning national championship.
 

Playing against a stingy Clarkson defense, the Gophers hoped they could win a low-scoring battle in Saturday's NCAA women's hockey quarterfinals. For much of the game, it looked like two goals might be enough to send them to the Frozen Four.

But the Gophers gave up the tying goal with 1 minute, 51 seconds left. The 2-2 tie stood for another 65:44 before Clarkson scored on the power play to defeat the Gophers 3-2 in four overtimes, earning a berth in the Frozen Four. The game at Cheel Arena in Potsdam, N.Y., was the longest in Gophers program history and the second-longest in NCAA tournament history..

Late in the third overtime, the game outlasted the 118:51 it took for the Gophers to beat North Dakota in the 2013 NCAA quarterfinals. That game at Ridder Arena was played exactly 11 years earlier.

The Gophers outshot Clarkson 64-56, with goaltender Lucy Morgan making 53 saves. The teams combined to attempt 273 shots..

Dominique Petrie scored the tying goal at 18:09 of the third period to send the game to overtime. She got the winner, too, scoring on the power play at 5:44 of the fourth OT after the Gophers' Audrey Wethington was penalized for interference.

Another very disappointing end to the Women's season. Should have made waves last year and could have this year and they failed. Let's hope the Men end their season better than last year by stepping up as a darkhorse and winning it all.
 

Give him one year with Primerano but it's time to start thinking about a coaching change. Gophers have fallen out of the top tier.

Luck was not on their side that goal came off our defenders skate Morgan played well all there goals were scored with a extra player I believe 53 saves is the highest in school history not a good sign need better D and more O if we want to make noise next year
 

This team needs to working on closing one goal leads against 6 on 5. We were in a position to win both the WCHA semifinal and the NCAA regional but couldn't close the door.
 

Frost has lost the edge. He forced our Darwitz who was the coach in waiting. Coyle should have dumped him last year and handed her the reigns.
 



Nina Steigauf from Oakdale, MN has entered the portal. She's the top scorer for the Bobcats. I wonder if there's any mutual interest with Minnesota.

She's #43 overall in the NCAA for goals. She doesn't make top-50 for points.
