48-team bracket highlights roadmap for 2024 Postseason WNIT

As the women’s D-I college basketball season works through the rest of its conference tournament schedule, officials with the 2024 Postseason WNIT are fully engaged ahead of Selection Night, when 48 teams will accept bids to the event.

The 48-team field will be selected on Sunday, March 17, after the NCAA and WBIT schedules are released – the Postseason WNIT will have matchups, times and locations determined and its bracket ready for viewing later on Monday, March 18.

Cincinnati from the Big 12 is the only other school from a P5 conference. The rest are mid majors.

Gophers Accepts Bid to Play in 2024 WNIT

MINNEAPOLIS – The Minnesota women's basketball team has accepted an invitation to play in the 26th Women’s National Invitational Tournament (WNIT). The Gophers, who are making their seventh appearance in the tournament, were announced as a part of the new 48-team field on Sunday night.

“We are excited to continue to compete and grow as a team,” said Plitzuweit. “This year we have had some incredible moments, faced adversity, but through it all we have continued to develop and improve. Getting the opportunity to be a part of the WNIT is a great honor and we are ready to get back on the court later this week!”

The official WNIT Bracket will be posted, with locations, late afternoon on Monday, March 18. The first-round games will be played between March 20-22. Minnesota’s last appearance in the WNIT was in 2022, where the team made the second round. The Golden Gophers are 6-6 all-time in the event, including a run to the ‘Sweet 16’ in 2014.

Holding a record of 16-15 overall and 5-13 in Big Ten play, Minnesota won six games against top 100 NET teams, as well as defeating numerous 2024 NCAA Tournament teams. In the Big Ten Tournament the Maroon and Gold, who are the youngest team in the conference this season, picked up a victory over Rutgers in the opening round before falling to eventual Big Ten semifinalists, Michigan.

Full 2024 WNIT Schedule:
- Selection - Sunday, March 17
- Round 1 – March 20-22
- Round 2 - March 23-26
- Round 3 – March 27-29
- Quarterfinals – March 30-31 or April 1
- Semifinals – April 2-3
- Championship - Saturday, April 6

Selection criteria for the 48-team tournament includes 32 automatic berths – one from each established conference, and an estimated 16 at-large teams.
 


Good, albeit small, step in the right direction. Rooting for Coach P as she already elevated the way the team has played (especially on D) now to hit the Portal for post players and more athleticism IMO
 



The only reason some of these teams were selected is that more than a few schools declined like how does a 13-20 record get you an invitation to a postseason tournament?
 






Do we think we have a good chance at hosting a couple rounds? I would guess Gophers would be able to get a few more fans than some other these other schools.

I am not sure how the logistics would work with the MSHSL boys basketball state tournament being played at Williams Arena starting on Wednesday.

Very unlikely to host a first round game as the boy's tournament is using the facilities.....and we've had this situation before with some of these post season games and had to go on the road. Target Center and Xcel (which is an awful place for basketball) are busy with the pro teams.
 


Basically 50% of programs get in a bracket, similar to pro sports.

68 NCAA Top

48 WNIT 3rd Group.
 

Just like college football expanding bowl games, why is the NCAA making another tournament just so more teams can play postseason basketball? If you weren't good enough to make the Big Dance, you dust yourself off and try harder next season.

Maybe because through TV money and sponsors they can make some more money?
Maybe because e v e r y b o d y gets a trophy in today's culture?

Why was the WBIT created?
The creation of the WBIT ensures the NCAA is providing equitable postseason opportunities for women’s basketball similar to that of men’s basketball, which was a recommendation from the 2021 Gender Equity Report.

NCAA supported men’s and women’s basketball postseason opportunities are now equitably available through a combination of the NCAA Division I Men’s or Women’s Basketball Championships (68 teams each) and men’s or women’s basketball postseason invitation tournaments (32 teams each).

Additionally, as women's basketball continues its growth trajectory, opportunities, and events like this support our three strategic goals of transformational student-athlete experience, quality competition and memorable championships.


With the addition of the WBIT, how many postseason opportunities will now exist in Division I women’s basketball?
Not including 11 schools currently in the reclassifying process from Division II, there are 349 Division I institutions that will sponsor women’s basketball in 2023-24, translating into 19.4% of schools that make the 68-team NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship. Starting in 2024 with the addition of the WBIT, 100 postseason NCAA funded opportunities will be available for women’s basketball teams, equal to that of men’s basketball through their two events (68 team championship and 32 team NIT). With the two women’s basketball events, the percentage of NCAA postseason opportunities in Division I women’s basketball will be 28.7%

This has nothing to do with equality, the NCAA got their asses handed to them a few years ago with their pathetic excuse for training facilities and accommodations. This is just their way of saving face while making a few more bucks along the way.

Hopefully! Boys HS BB is done on 3/23, so could be ready by 2nd day of round 2.

They are on the top of the bracket, so my guess is they will host as long as they keep winning until the neutral sites.

Gophers women's can't host. this weekend is the boys basketball tourney at Williams Arena. Thursday through Saturday. It start tomorrow with QF actions. Some QF games are playing at Target Center. But all semifinals of Class 1a, 2a, 3a, 4a are at Williams Arena.
