"with an assist from unimaginative play-calling by Minnesota"

Seems like one of the Columbus Dispatch reporters was not impressed by Limegrover and his play-calling last night.

Seems like one of the Columbus Dispatch reporters was not impressed by Limegrover and his play-calling last night.

Why is this surprising?

The play calling wreaked of "we don't think we are good enough, let's just keep it close and maybe we will get lucky"

I wonder if limegrover realized that the team had more success when he was aggressive? Last night, last week, all year

Everything about Limey's playcalling wreaks....

Maybe Limey read the "Mitch is not a D1 QB" thread and that is why he is more conservative. In many cases the same folks saying ML7 is the worst QB in Gopher history are mad Limey doesn't have him chucking the ball 40 yards down field on each play. You can't have it both ways.

Ohio State can mostly thank its defense — with an assist from unimaginative play-calling by Minnesota (4-5, 1-4). With interim coach Tracy Claeys in his second game taking over for the retired Jerry Kill, the Golden Gophers repeatedly kept running the ball up the middle on first and second down against the Buckeyes. It was a futile approach.

Wide receiver KJ Maye made some big catches, but otherwise Ohio State yielded little until it took control of the game. The Buckeyes limited Minnesota to less than 10 yards on eight of its first 10 possessions.

Fittingly, the defense provided the first offense for Ohio State as well when safety Vonn Bell intercepted a pass and returned it 16 yards for a touchdown with 4:53 left in the first half...

The problem is (Kill) and Company may be patting themselves on the back after the Gophers scored and made it 21-14. "See! That's what we were planning for!"

Many of observers watched the game and thought "It was there for the taking if the Gophers didn't game plan for constant 2nd and 8 or 2nd and 9 plays". The Coaching Staff watched it and thought "We were in it at the end because he were ultra conservative."

They shouldn't get credit for a "close loss." They should get the blame for being down 21-0 at the half.

You act like quarterback play and offensive success are separate issues.

It is on the coaching staff to develop offensive players and score offensive points.
They haven't done well in either aspect this year.

ML7 has impressed me the past 4-5 weeks. It is apparent to me his talent makes deficient in some areas but he has hung tough while the coaching staff has put him in bad spots.

-8 rushing yards in the third quarter and 3 and outs would seem to suggest same

What the writer or columnist from the Post Dispatch wrote or said is partially true, even if you take in account the offensive line play and all of the big shots that Leidner took from the Bucks. It was obvious the run calls up the middle were not working and yet they kept trying them. Not suggesting they started a chuck fest of passing, but they waited to long to change running backs or stop the pulling plays.
The Buckeyes have a good defensive line but the play calling lacked a lot to be desired in the first and third quarters. Far to many punts and three and outs.

Never been a fan of the way Limegrover coaches the offensive line. If they offer the job to Claeys this is the one big change I hope he makes, changing responsibility of offensive coordinator and adding a separate offensive line coach.
This is the area on the staff that needs an upgrade.

This current O-line is awful. Worst in B10. Lower tier Mac level. Until that changes, the stuff we currently run is all the stuff we CAN run. To be within 7 in the 4th quarter was a minor miracle.

If this is your argument to keep the coaches in their 5th year, try again.

We threw the ball twice as much as we ran it last night.

It's amazing math that we always ran it on first and second down. It's almost mathematically impossible.

Go away troll.

You think having the worst o line in the conference is a good argument to keep the coach.

You think anyone who doesn't want to keep the current staff is a troll?

Your in the wrong thread. The argument here should be that our OL dictates what plays we run/are successful with.

No, I think you are a troll.

We threw the ball twice as much as we ran it last night.

Not quite: 45 passing attempts vs. 26 rushes. If we would have thrown the ball 53 times and rushed 18 times, that would be a 2.94 to 1 ratio and we might have picked up an additional 40 to 50 yards. Hard to tell for sure, of course, but we weren't getting anywhere on the ground.

The OP is about the coaching staff being unimaginative.

Are you sure you are in the right thread?

Not one mention of coaching staff. All about play calling - just like this thread. Yet, your response to that post Some guy:
If this is your argument to keep the coaches in their 5th year, try again.

So, who is turning this thread into what they want it to be? Exactly like every other thread.

Mitch was getting killed in the passing game and Jonah could not handle bosa at all. People just love to think that everything bad that happens in any game is because of play call x instead of play call y. It's impossible to disprove that's why those people feel they are always right.
We had to run and our best running plays weren't good enough against a great defense. The end.

Not at all what my criticism of he play calling last night would be.
You are right, you have to run the ball.

So we kept running them. The final score.

This is been a bad habit for a long time - we averaged only two yards a carry all game if you factor Leidner's losses out of the total. First down was wasted over and over again. Last week even the Michigan DC called our sneak at the end - so obvious. Do the unexpected, Limey!

If Roderick Williams' fumble is what put him on the bench, maybe that needs to be forgiven. Having him run the ball all game wouldn't have made a difference in the end, but his ability to deliver some punishment on the tackler was on full display last night. He should be in the rotation.

I agree there should be a bigger role for Nuggett. I think it is RS24 & SB27 ability/performance, however, that is keeping RW35 on the bench.

So we kept running them. The final score.

Final score was dictated by the pick 6. I understand the play calling complaint, but you are acting as if the 7 point deficit with 2 to play and a long third down upcoming weren't results of play calling but rather that we would have been leading had we abandoned the run or I guess ran more jet sweep. I see no evidence that is true. I believe the coaches that our margin was small. We got no TOs and gave them a big one. That's why we lost.

Are you under the impression that the "pick 6" took place on the 4th Quarter? It took place  the 4:53 mark of the 2nd quarter. That made it 7-0 and, reading your post "you are acting as if the 7 point deficit" was insurmountable because "our margin was small" and "that's why we lost".

You may be partially right and it explains why you are so comfortable with 2 and 8 or 2 and 9. That's "why we lost" but hey, it's was only by 14.

Gotta keep those losses looking close.

"More jet sweeps".

That was coming after a 1st Quarter where the Gophers moved the ball thru the air but "terrified" tOSU by getting 1-2 yards at a crack on the ground. Matter of fact the Running Game stopped the Gopher Offense or didn't help much at all in the 1st Half.
