Adam Wilcox of the No. 2 Minnesota men’s hockey program has been named a candidate for the inaugural Mike Richter Award, which will annually honor the most outstanding goaltender in NCAA men’s hockey and is awarded by Let’s Play Hockey and the Herb Brooks Foundation.

The inaugural award will be presented at the 2014 NCAA Men’s Frozen Four in Philadelphia.

One of 18 candidates for this year’s award, Wilcox currently has the Gophers ranked second in the nation while the Gophers enter the team’s final home series of the year on top of the Big Ten Conference rankings. The sophomore’s 20 wins this season (20-4-5) are third most in the nation and first in the Big Ten while the netminder also ranks seventh nationally in goals against average (1.97) and 10th nationally in save percentage (.931).

In 68 career games played, Wilcox has posted a 45-12-10 overall record. Out of those games, 32 have been played against nationally ranked foes with the sophomore netminder recording a 19-10-3 record against ranked teams.

Wilcox’s 19-save shutout on Feb. 1, 2014 against Michigan State was his third of the season and sixth overall as a Gopher. The South St. Paul, Minn., native is now seventh all-time at Minnesota in career shutouts and needs one more to tie Kent Patterson, Steve DeBus, John Blue and Jim Mattson for third all-time at Minnesota. Kellen Briggs holds the Gophers record for career shutouts at 13 with Adam Hauser in second at eight.

Candidates for the Mike Richter Award were determined by nominations from all 59 NCAA Division I men’s hockey head coaches. The finalists and winner will be selected by a committee of coaches, scouts and members of the media.
Criteria for the Mike Richter Award:

*Candidates must display outstanding skills on the ice
