6. Minnesota (1-0)

Last week: 8

This week: Western Illinois

What to know: After an emotional win against New Mexico State and former Golden Gophers coach Jerry Kill, Minny can flatline it against the Leathernecks and still get the Dub.

Go Gophers!!

  1. Minnesota (1-0)
Minnesota out-grained New Mexico State on offense 485 to 91 in total yards. The Gophers’ defense was only on the field for less than 16 minutes as they shut out the Aggies. Mo Ibrahim looked great as he scored twice and ran for 132 yards.

Next Up: Western Illinois

5. Minnesota (Last week: 6)

Minnesota was the second Big Ten team to shut out an opponent in Week 1, with Wisconsin being the other. Minnesota’s Week 1 opponent, New Mexico State, won two games a season ago, so while getting the shutout win was impressive, it was very much to be expected.

Next up: Western Illinois

7. Minnesota

A very workmanlike performance for the Gophers as they defeated New Mexico State 38-0. Next up, home vs. Western Illinois.

Overall: 1-0; up next: Western Illinois

Jerry Kill, Minnesota’s former coach who was forced to step away due to health issues, returned to campus on Thursday as New Mexico State’s head coach. His team didn’t score and was outgained in yardage 485 to 91. The Big Ten is loaded with veteran quarterbacks, and sixth-year Tanner Morgan is among them. He was sharp, as was running back Mo Ibrahim in his return from injury.

Go Gophers!!

5. Minnesota

Minnesota got a workmanlike win over New Mexico State and it was about as Minnesota as it could be with hard work on the ground, solid defense, and a lot of boat-rowing. Another game that doesn’t tell us too much, but pitching a shutout and looking more than adequate on offense is worth points this week.

Go Gophers!!

Spartan Nation chimes in:

4.) Minnesota

Last Week: 4
Week 1 result: Win, 38-0, vs. New Mexico State
Record: 1-0
Comments: Kind of another ho-hum result here. The Golden Gophers did exactly what they were supposed to do in this one, and got an easy win in their season-opener. I expect Minnesota to be a serious contender for the Big Ten West division, led by quarterback Tanner Morgan and tailback Mohamed Ibrahim.

Next Opponent: Western Illinois (0-1)

The Golden Gophers looked impressive Thursday night, beating New Mexico State 38-0. Many probably forgot that Minnesota even played on Thursday with the Backyard Brawl and Penn State/Purdue also on that night. Mohamed Ibrahim certainly looked like his old self, carrying the ball 21 times for 132 yards and two touchdowns. It’s great to see him healthy. Overall, the Gophers ran for 297 yards and featured numerous different running backs. The defense also picked up where they left off last year, pitching a shutout. This unit is quietly one of the better defenses in the conference. Minnesota will compete for the Big Ten West title.

Go Gophers!!

Husker Corner chimes in:

4. Minnesota (1-0, 0-0)

The Golden Gophers didn’t face off against a really tough opponent in their first game of the year, but they get points here for putting away New Mexico State early and keeping their boot on the Aggies’ neck all game. Minnesota finished with nearly 300 yards rushing and 485 yards of offense total. They allowed just 91 total yards. That’s why they get this spot this week.
