After tallying the first natural hat trick in Big Ten Conference history on Saturday night, Sam Warning of the top-ranked Gopher hockey program has been named the league’s Second Star of the Week.

With Ohio State up 2-0 early in Saturday’s contest, the Chesterfield, Mo., native tallied three-straight goals including the eventual game winner to extend Minnesota’s unbeaten streak to 10 games (the longest active streak in the nation).

Minnesota’s leading point getter this season, Warning ranks second in the Big Ten with 26 points (10 goals, 16 assists; all three stats are career highs for the forward) and ranks second nationally in plus/minus at +21 (first in the Big Ten). The junior now has five goals in his last three games.

This week’s honor is Warning’s fourth overall this season. The forward opened the season with three-straight Big Ten awards. Minnesota has now earned Big Ten honors in each of the team’s 11 weeks of competition this season – Minnesota’s first in the Big Ten Conference. The Gophers have now earned a total of 14 weekly honors from nine different players.

No. 1 Minnesota returns to action this weekend with the inaugural North Star College Cup at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. Four of Minnesota’s five Division I college hockey programs will compete for in-state bragging rights at the tournament with Minnesota Duluth, St. Cloud State and Minnesota State joining the Gophers. The Bulldogs and Mavericks open play at 4 p.m. CT on Friday followed by a top-five matchup between the No. 1 Gophers and No. 5 Huskies at 7 p.m. Saturday’s consolation game is set for 4 p.m. with the championship game set for 7 p.m. All four games will be broadcast on FOX Sports North.
