Uniforms

After sitting on it all off-season, I have decided which uniform combinations I liked best from last year.

On the road we saw only all-whites. If I had my way, we would go back to white on top, gold on bottom.

At home we saw:

1. All gold (AFA)
2. Gold tops, maroon bottoms (Cal)
3. All maroon (MSU, Pur, Ill)
4. Maroon tops, gold bottoms (wisc, SDSU)

Of those, I thought the best one was Gold Tops with maroon bottoms. Followed by Maroon tops and gold bottoms, then all maroons, and finally all golds.

Our team is called "Golden" because of the gold uniforms they wore back in the day. We need to have at least some gold in there. Otherwise we are no better than the White Sox, who used to wear white socks, but now always wear black socks... and that's lame. Plus, I believe it would help our fans wear more gold if they saw the players wearing gold jerseys at home.

And simply from an aesthetic standpoint, I really think having contrasting tops and bottoms is much sharper than having all of one color.

Obviously, it doesn't matter at all, as long as the Gophers win. This is all in the spirit of fun conjecture.

Honorable mention for some pretty sweet uniforms... IMO. They would look much better at the Bank, too. It would be sweet to play a game against wisky or Iowa where both teams wore their uniforms from that era.

The throwbacks should be the permanent home uniform.
Throwback whites should be worn on the road.
Those uni's are as sharp as I've ever seen. Can't understand why they aren't used.

Would like to see Maroon tops and white bottoms - modern retro look for the lads. Least fave is the all maroons. Of course I like black shoes (except with all whites) so what do I know.

Yeah, maroon tops and gold bottoms are very good. Classic. Standard. Normally I would think those are best, but I think more of a statement can be made with a bright gold jersey. Not sure how many schools have a solid gold jersey, but it has the potential, IMO, to be a really recognizable look.

Team is moving to black shoes this year. I'd like to see a black uni with maroon and white (the hoop squad looks great in black). Probably won't happen because there can't be any gold or they will look similar to Iowa. Hope black shoes also mean a change to black socks. Gold, Maroon, White and Black is too much.

all gold, a.k.a., "the french fries dipped in ketchup" - somewhat intimidating
all maroon - look the fastest in these

We are not the University of Minnesota All White Gophers. I also hate the all golds (pinks). Maroon on top, gold on bottom is and has been very good. White over gold on the road.

Best home look by far was the gold Jersey with the maroon bottom. Like the white Jersey on the road but it needs to have gold pants to offset the blend effect. Black shoes would look bad with white pants.

I personally like the all maroon and all white uniforms the best. I really don't care for the "gold" color that seems to change with every new uniform design. My least favorite look is the all gold, followed by the maroon jersey/gold pants. I like the gold jersey with the maroon pants, the best out of the options we've seen involving the gold. That said, I'll like whatever they actually win in, whenever that might be. We need to win some games and establish a uniform instead of constantly changing trying to find an identity.

Why not wear all gold then? It was awesome to see both the student section and the team completely covered in gold. It was the best combo all year - I was waiting for them to use them again. Personally, I feel mixing gold and maroon jerseys/pants looks odd. But that's just me.

I think after playing NCAA 2011 my favorite home uni combo would have to be gold tops with white pants. It's a good look that has maroon (helmet) and gold but isn't a tacky look.

I would like to see a simple maroon jersey with gold numbers on the sleeves, gold pants and an alternate gold jersey for special games. Road jerseys would be equally simple, white with maroon numbers. Another thing I would like to see is us going back to the "M" on the helmet like is was in the 70s.

I go with Maroon tops and White pants in NCAA11 quite a bit on my xbox, it reminds me of the uniforms from the 60's, and I think it looks really sharp. My next fave would be maroon top/gold pants. I've gotten used to the all white road jerseys, but gold pants look good on the road too.

As an avid uniwatcher http://www.uniwatchblog.com I really like the gold tops, but when players sweat there are certain sections of the jersey that turn into a dark urine color and it's fairly obvious. I think it has to do with the fabric/color combo, but the maroons don't have this problem.

Road:

White Top, Maroon Bottom is the best
White top & Maroon Bottom doesn't work well, but white with white is bad IMO.

I think we'll see our Gold tops again vs. USC this year....just not sure if they'll have gold or maroon pants to go with them.

I love the all gold uniforms. I'd actually like to see a gold helmet too...ala the painting below of Bruce and the helmet that Craig Curry wore in 1970.

or was it close to this... 1939 vs. Iowa. Maroon helmets too...maybe they nailed the usual look of the old Gopher teams with the maroon hat and gold unis for the opener against Air Force last year.

Mix It Up

Since we really don't have a "traditional" look, I think we need to mix it up. Right now we have the possibility of nine combos. Why not do it like Cal and use all of them? While I have preferences among the combos, I'm completely bored by the all white look on the road. It's not as though we've gone undefeated with it. Let's look at some other options.

I think we should wear every combo over the course of the season. This is how I would plan the season.

at Middle Tennessee State - white jerseys / maroon pants
South Dakota - maroon jerseys / white pants
USC - maroon jerseys / gold pants
Northern Illinois - gold jerseys / white pants
Northwestern - gold jerseys / maroon pants
at Wisconsin - white jerseys / gold pants
at Purdue - white jerseys / white pants
Penn State - maroon jerseys / maroon pants
Ohio State - gold jerseys / gold pants
at Michigan State - white jerseys / maroon pants
at Illinois - white jerseys / gold pants
Iowa - Maroon jerseys / white pants

The other idea I would copy from Cal is to occasionally wear black shoes and socks. Maybe just with the maroon pants. But I know Brew probably wouldn't go for that.
