Time to reevaluate

I hate to start going down this road as Ben can still make it happen I think, BUT, I don't know how you don't go Medved if the job opens again. What he's doing with that team in Bozeman is impressive.
Which of these guys are you referring to?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Niko_Medved
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danny_Sprinkle

I've never heard of Sprinkle before, but I agree he seems to have had some nice results the past few seasons.

But usually people talk about Craig Smith or Niko Medved due to Minnesota connections.

Us fans are left guessing, so I guess we guess. That's a good guess.

Like I posted in that other thread, you never want to overreact to one game or even a short winning or losing streak. The part that troubles me is how much whiplash there's been adjusting to whichever Gopher team happens to show up in any one half of basketball. They seem to have two general speeds: unstoppable and sleepwalking. I don't get it.
a good deal of this is simply the fact that this team is very reliant on getting hot from 3. Most teams are but it’s a very much our identity.

Fort Collins, been there a couple times. Had a friend in college who lived there. His mom was a pageant coordinator and I got to be an escort for a Ms. Montana pageant in Billings (she won of course). New Belgium Brewery is there too, back then it was basically Fat Tire, Sunshine Wheat (way better than Blue Moon in my humble opinion), and a few seasonals.

Yeah I figured he meant Fort Collins.

But the guy who was in Bozeman had a couple really nice seasons for them the past two years and got called up to Utah State this year, and has them doing pretty well.

Probably has zero ties to Minnesota and thus would never be someone that would even occur to Coyle to look at, but who knows.

Some aspects of the game are controllable. For example, effort in defense usually yields results. Cause and effect.

On the other hand, shooting varies randomly. Once the ball leaves, it's uncontrollable, within a range of variation. Working on this helps, of course, and experience helps.

Look at Hawkins scoring over 20 a few games ago, but not yesterday. Christie put up good -- even really good -- numbers in some games that alternated with nothing-blah games.

I'm only pointing out this one element, not a bigger point.

Christie is a freshman. This NBA talk has people forgetting that he isn't anywhere near his top yet and still a freshman.
I'm reading this as I'm watching the Michigan women making everything difficult for the Gophers. That keeps you in almost every game no matter how you're shooting.

Haha you're pitching the area well and I'm sold. I'll check the brews out.

Here’s an idea: fuck it if they don’t have a Minnesota connection (and I’m not saying you’re taking that position, only that it somehow seems to be a major criterion for Coyle). The best Gophers coach in my 38 years of fandom was Clem, who likely never set foot in the state before he was hired. Find the best coach you can, one who will ignite the program and fan base, birthplace be damned.

Man Debbie downers! Gloom and doom! It’s one game! The sky is falling! The sun will come out tomorrow and we can beat Northwestern! Have faith!

The year Baylor won the tournament, there were some outrageously good offenses and some outrageously good defenses that made runs in the tournament. When I watched the really good offenses, it was apparent that they just had players that were better than ours and capable of doing things (shooting or driving) that our players couldn't do as well.

But, when watching the really good defenses, they didn't seem to do anything we couldn't. They weren't good because they were making absurd athletic plays coming out of nowhere to block shots from behind or anything like that. They just moved their feet, were engaged and focused, kept their hands active, hustled, and were in the right spot at the right time. And without ever seeing a highlight reel defensive play, you would see a defense that made everything hard on the other team.

What that told me is that we don't need the best 5 guys who ever played the game to be a good defensive team. We just need a group of solid guys who are coached to do the right things and willing to do them.

Mission Accomplished for Ben - he gets another year or two.

Coyle on the other hand - I am open to replacing him with one of the guys mentioned above.

I wonder if any of these posters even watched the team in November. If they did and can't see the difference then it's their problem, a lot of the improvement has to do with coaching.

Well, I've watched for decades of Novembers through decades of Aprils. You are correct, this team is playing better in March than in November. And, certainly, some of the improvement is due to coaching and some to development of players - Christie.

I wonder if some of these posters are capable of recognizing the similarities of the past couple years.

He will get another year. Please hit the portal harder. Bring in even a couple more players than you think are needed.
Amen - Stop with the bare minimum nonsense. Easier said than done but that's why you make 2-3 mile per year. If you can't do it, find someone who can.

You recruit shooters and scorers. You teach defense.

Well, well, well.......daka$$ returns. Take a couple days to climb up from your perch on the minimum expectation ledge?

Chinese have captured Barnie’s account.

How many wins have your expectations produced?
He could ask you the same thing. I guess we all lose in this scenario since no ones expectations have resulted in winning anything significant. Unless we cheat. Time to reevaluate. I think we should all take out a loan and send it to the NIL collective. It's so stupid it might just work.

My expectation now and for nearly three years is that the team improves with better players, hard work on defense, and learning to win.

Year one showed a little of that with a non-Big Ten roster winning a few games and working hard. Year two showed none of it. Year three has shown enormous improvement on all fronts. Going the right direction.

As 777 said, your minute expectations have produced historically bad seasons. How's that working for you?

Your crowing has stopped, and I understand why. Mn is a game better in conference than many teams this board has slammed as being putrid. How's that working for you?

Being improved from the depths of garbage doesn't take much. You like that, good on you. I feel Mn can be so, so much better. Your happy with the past three years.

How have my wishes or expectations produced historically bad years? How have your expectations caused the opposite?

Your premise is, of course, absurd.

Your crowing sure stopped after the Hoosiers beat Mn. Huh. What happened?

My premise is spot on. Programs that take winning seriously are usually very successful. Those that don't? Historically poor performance, as the two seasons prior to this season show.

Mn is a game or two better in wins in conference than schools that have been slammed here. .500 in conference this year is pathetic. Conference is simply not that good.

I am not part of the program and you most assuredly are not. I am a fan; you are a mindless critic..

If you don't believe we have a serious program, your issue is with Coyle and the Administration, not me. In those hallowed halls you are nobody, just like here.
