Per Sam:
* Fleck Ball wins games. Jim Tressel hasn’t been a head coach since 2010. P.J. Fleck, one of Tressel’s key disciples, prioritizes time of possession and field position in a streak of conservatism that belies Fleck’s splash of personal style. Among Big Ten teams, Minnesota has ranked first or second in time of possession in each of the last five years; for the last three seasons, Minnesota has ranked No. 1 among league in rushes per game.
Keep-away works against the Big Ten middle and lower classes. Fleck is 24-15 in Big Ten games since 2019. He’s qualified for three bowl games — and won them all. In Minnesota’s 27-12 win over Michigan State, the fifth-string running back, Jordan Nubin, rushed for 204 yards and won Big Ten Player of the Week honors.
“We did a really good job of wearing down their front seven,’’ Fleck told the Minneapolis Star-Tribune at his weekly press conference. “And at that point, those 3- to 4-yard carries were becoming 6-, 7- or 8-yard carries. And once that starts happening, you know me: We’re going to keep it on the ground and make the game shorter.’’

The Big Ten West’s logjam may be broken by Matt Rhule’s wind or PJ Fleck’s keep-away
Big Ten West teams are averaging a historically bad 18.2 points per game. Why are the defenses so far ahead? Matt Rhule has a theory.
