Good for him. Thanks Tony, I didn't know this. Anyone know if there a way for a guy out of state to watch this? Knowing me, someone already posted it and I can't find it.

Yes that is college sports. Big time college sports has always been a lucrative industry. The only difference now is players are legally allowed to be compensated for the value they provide. It's not right to suppress someone's ability to earn a living just because we want to maintain some charade of amateurism. People are free to stop following as they please, but if you think the answer is to deny someone's ability to get paid for their talents that is pretty messed up.

So the theory of amateurism is gone? Pretty soon, do high schools start offering NIL to players to attract them to their schools??? Take out the requirement to go to college. Let em all go pro. But if you decide to accept a scholarship and play college sports, you shouldn't be doing so based on how much money you can get from an NIL.
 

NIL opens the field to bagmen and athletic pimps. Minnesota will be a loser in this scenario. The money will go almost exclusively to the high profile, top end athlete while the 3rd team OL who is in the weight room every morning, at practice every day, etc will get zilch. Only his mother and girl friend will buy his T shirts of whatever. This will have a chilling effect on team cohesion. Really a bad idea. The landscape began to change with the huge amount of TV money pouring into the larger schools. $1 billion for the BIG split among 14 teams That's over $71M per team....More than the Gophers take in for FB ticket revenue. There has got to be a better solution.

This! The boosters from Bama, OSU, MI, UGA, Clemson, etc. have been compensating the blue chippers for a long time now! The difference now is that programs like the U can do the same without retribution from the NCAA if people are willing to step up and make it happen!

I’m really curious when there is going to be a case where this trickles into high school athletics

Because that’s when Congress might actually get involved to regulate.
Only a few places and people would probably have NIL in HS sports

But when one state’s association loses a case all of a sudden anyone in any association has grounds to make money. Which will make Texas HS football more fun

Yeah the way to get more parity would be all of or any of the following things:

Roster size limits for both spring and fall (not scholarship limits, roster size)…I personally suggest somewhere between 85-100…people sitting out to transfer have to count as one of the 85-100 to be eligible the next year

No more free transfers. Sit out a year, no exemptions (you could even make it so they don’t lose eligibility but still have to sit out a year)

Roster spots guaranteed (would have to be paired with the first thing)…but you automatically occupy one of the roster spots for 3 years minimum unless you voluntarily give it up (meaning you can’t get cut) and your 4 years of scholarship is guaranteed even if you’re cut

Automatic bids for conference champions to any size playoff

Without a doubt in mind there have been a lot of 6 figure deals. Maybe not any for a mil but def 300k+ deals

In some sense, the Alabama's of the world were already getting the highest ranked players anyway. Players that the U (of Minn) never had a shot at, regardless if they were allowed to be paid above the table or given bags below the table.


BUT, on the other hand, if all the above table shenanigans turn people off, and they stop watching, that will kill all the big TV money that is poured into it ...

You are right on but, unfortunately, this just feeds the arms race. The big names who have rabid fan bases and boosters LIVE for their teams and will pony up more moolah than the next tier of Power 5 teams like the Gophers.
