It’s hard to believe we’re already through Week #9 of the college basketball season. As usually happens with the advent of conference play, we had quite a bit of movement in the Field of 68 this past week.

There are 14 new teams in the field, including surging #47 Wake Forest (4-3 vs. Quads 1/2 with no bad losses) and #73 Seton Hall. (3-2 vs. Quad 1). You might be surprised to see only 5 Big XII teams in the current Field of 68 projection. For now, I’m leaving several teams out despite gaudy overall records because of their embarrassingly soft non-conference schedules and very little “meat” on their resumes. That means you #12 Iowa State (#317 NC SOS) and #38 TCU (#309 NC SOS), specifically, and to a slightly lesser degree #36 Texas Tech (#262 NC SOS).

Also noteworthy, with its first loss of the season James Madison has shifted from the Sun Belt’s automatic qualifier to an at-large selection. The Dukes’ NET ranking plummeted from #30 to #56 after Saturday’s loss at Southern Miss.

Automatic qualifiers from multiple-bid conferences are listed first. The automatic qualifier is the team with the best conference record (i.e. 2-0 is better than 1-0) or – in the event of a tie – the best NET ranking.

Any small chance Drake had an at-large bid down the road went out the window today. Getting smoked by Belmont.

I've always said Haslametrics or whatever it's called is the brightest mind of all the ranking systems.

I hope the committee looks at those B12 NC slates closely. Since their league chose to stick with a 18 game conference slate, each of those teams had 2 extra games to fill. Almost all of them chose to play 2 more home "buy" games. I get it for a team like Cincy or UCF, but TCU, IowaSt, and Texas are simply betting their chances of dancing on a good league record.

Texas played 9 home "buy" games.
