An Excelsior, Minnesota native and rookie defenseman for the Omaha Lancers of the United States Hockey League (USHL), Steven Johnson has committed to play NCAA Division 1 college hockey for the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers of the Big Ten Hockey Conference starting in the 2014-15 season, the team announced Thursday.
"We're thrilled for Steven," said Lancers Head Coach and General Manager Brian Kaufman on Thursday. "He's already established himself as a reliable two-way defenseman for us this year and his skill set will translate well to the college game." In three games played for the Lancers so far this season, Johnson has tallied a pair of assists, is tied for the team lead in plus-minus with a +5 rating and his 13 shots on goal rank first among all Omaha skaters.
"It feels incredible," said Johnson Thursday. "I grew up watching [the Gophers] and never thought I could be out there with them, but now that I'm a part of that, it's a great feeling."
