Coach Kill's responses this morning to Sid and Mike Max's queries:
1) Max opened the program saying he knows that coach Kill cannot talk about recruits; however, in theory, if they got a verbal from a top recruit (Pirsig) that would be a good thing?: Coach Kill responded quickly and succinctly, "It's a good thing in theory!" (There was laughter and a smile in his voice/response.)
2) Chicago Media Day: The higher you go the bigger the events get, "Good experience (personally) and for the Big 10.
3) Sid asked about the new coaches in the conference: Knows Brady Hoke from their days in the MAC. Is somewhat familiar with Bo Pelini of Nebraska . . . he went on to say thay they recently hired a video specialist from Nebraska. He then mentioned Joe Pa (respect in his voice) and that Paterno is doing well.
4) Recruiting: "Recruiting is the name of the game." Ongoing and an everyday basis . . . "You win with players."
5) What will the coaches do this week?: Putting the finishing touches to preparations for the fall camp and making preliminary plans. 105 players will be invited to the fall camp, which is the allowable maximum. And then coach Kill said again, recruiting continues during the upcoming week.
6) Close to 115 players participated in summer drills w/o coaches. If they know for sure a recruit will be redshirted they won't be among the 105 invited; however, injuries can change the situation in that they replace injured player(s) with another player to stay within the allowable 105.
7) Redshirts: Discuss the redshirt role with the player. If there's quality depth at a position there's a greater chance of a redshirt season . . . don't want to waste a year of eligibility and development on a few plays played. "We may have to play frreshmen . . . we'll know more during the two-a-days." The decision to redshirt or not is difficult with the in-between players. (Could contribute but may not.) Max also asked if coach Kill has started a freshman at quarterback?: He started a true freshman at Pittsburgh State and a redshirt freshman at Southern Illinois. He mentioned he considered starting Chandler Harnish at NIU against the Cyclones of Iowa State a few years back, but didn't think at the time that he was ready. In retrospect, he could of and if he had, they'd might of have (good chance) defeated the Big 12 opponent.
8) Sid asked who the number 2 QB is?: "No idea who the number two quarterback is!"
9) How much time being spent on preparing for USC: Has viewed film and the last two weeks of fall camp will focus on the opening day opponent. The coaching staff has also viewed film of six or seven opponents that didn't experience head coaching changes.
10) Injuries: He mentioned Kendall Gregory who fractured a foot before spring ball in a pickup basketball game. He's receovered and they'll see how it goes in fall camp. D'Jon MacKnight: Slow process . . . will be careful in camp and make sure he's ready to play against USC. He talked about MacKnight's talent and that it's needed!
Go Gophers!!
