Scholarship Count 24-25 Season (Portal Availability) - 1 Currently Available

Like the line in the famous Talking Heads' song "Same as it ever was."

You are right and not necessarily a bad thing. If you are playing your 11th/12th/13th scholarship players, that probably means the season has gone off the rails. But you want those scholarships to eventually contribute, no? A scholarship or two devoted to a project and/or high ceiling guy that may eventually develop is better than wasting on a walk-on or 5th year grad that doesn't see the court.

The issue with that in the current era is the younger projects transfer before they even develop. We'll see if Betts and the European player stick around.

I've never understood the obsession with "Minnesota ties" as some sort of mandate for recruiting players and/or hiring coaches.

Truthfully, the three biggest additions to this year's team (Mitchell/Hawkins/Christie) were all from outside of Minnesota and the biggest addition by subtraction in the eyes of many (Battle) was from Minnesota. Now that could have been the opposite but that's the point. It doesn't matter where a kid went to high school. Is this provincialism a fear that we can't get players from outside Minnesota?

I think half this board would rather lose with Minnesota kids than win with out of state kids. I don't get it.
Fans get frustrated when in-state guys go other places and have success but there are definitely some who get way over hung up on where a player is from.

The hope is you get the program to a point where the top in-state guys want to stay home and play for the Gophers but that doesn't happen overnight and will always be an uphill battle when you are talking about the best players because it is really tough to turn down the blue bloods when they come calling.

The "one of us" mentality is very strong in this state. But in the end it doesn't make one bit of difference where a player is from as long as they can play.

Good point too. Yea, Christie from Illinois, to be clear, two states over, upper midwest. The rest I mentioned from MN. Has worked out for Christie and all of them.

Agreed.

I think of my own college aged kids. Two of them really had/have no interest in going to Minnesota. They wanted to try something different. One of my other kids will never leave Minnesota. I can't imagine it would be any different for Division 1 athletes.

With NIL/free transfers/years of traveling for AAU basketball, etc., I don't think loyalty to the local program is where many of us think it should be or want it to be. The landscape has changed dramatically in college sports. The measure of a coach should not be how many Minnesota players he can "get" but on his won/loss record.

That being said on the out of state and Minnesota players, wonder if Evans would have said no from the get go, they might have went after Kapke?
(He doesn’t get very many minutes at all with Butler, so maybe they weren’t all that interested in him. It’s me thinking about a back up big man for next year.)

Actually, my point there was that we usually are a team that doesn't have much depth even when we start the season thinking we do. Pitino's last season was a great example and this season has been to some extent.

I'm not against taking on projects with those 11th and 12th scholarships as you say but I would love to see a season where we can get regular contributions from 8 or 9 players anyway. Fox really has come on in the latter part of the season but in the debacle at Nebraska we had no points off the bench until a 3 pointer from a surprising Ihnen appearance in the last minute of the game. JOJ has fallen out of the regular rotation, Carrington has had some issues and injuries during the season, and Ihnen, who looked like he might be a solid rotation player early in the season, can only get into a game to give someone a momentary breather or as a desperation substitute for someone in foul trouble. I'm sure almost no one had high hopes for Big Jack but his only role appears to be as a crowd favorite in a blowout, a situation we don't have in conference games. Perhaps it's too early to close the book but Betts at this point looks like a recruiting mistake.

I hope Carrington returns as soon as possible because it scares the hell out of me when we're playing with only 3 available guards on the roster.

And fine thinking it is! I forgot all about him!

As far as his lack of playing time, well, he's a freshman, Butler is a very guard oriented team, and there are two big men ahead of him.

One of those big men ahead of him is a 5th year senior so he should move up in the rotation if he stays there. The other is a 4th year senior who could play a 5th year. So far, they don't have a big man recruit committed for next season. It should be noted, though, that Butler brought in 6 transfers last season!

I think he would be a fine target if he enters the portal. He's appeared in 20 games and has played 139 minutes (about 7 minutes per game). His shooting has been good. He's 8 for 11 from the line and even hit 7 threes this season. He had 8 points in 12 minutes in a game at Creighton.

Agree. Is it cool to keep in-state talent here for sure it is but winning is winning and that takes talent regardless where it come from I just want to wiin.

No inside information on Kapke but if he portals, look at Wisconsin. I think his parents are both Madison grads and he fits the mold over there.

He definitely doesn't elevate much, next year his recovery might be that much further along or not change at all. Transferring is going to be tough because of citizenship issues. It's his choice if he plays or not, doubt he transfers.
I'm not sure its lack of elevation, rather having a good handle on the ball during his drives. Coffey was the same way.

Fun fact on Kapke -- he has shot more 3's this year (7/16) than 2's (8/14). And has shot FT's well for a big man in a very limited sample, 8/11 (73%).

tweet from Marcus Fuller (Strib beat writer)

Dawson Garcia and Elijah Hawkins said they'll both make decisions about returning next year after the season to focus on the team right now. "It's definitely a possibility," Garcia said.

So Hawkins is not a lock to return. stating the obvious - if both leave, that puts things in a very different situation.

Ben needs to recruit his roster.

For bargaining purposes this is what they need to say. I hope they both stay on!

Looking at that as a positive. Was certain he wouldn't be back.

Just the opposite.

Which state did Garcia, Christie, Payne, Carrington, Fox come from?

Those are CBJ's guys. Probably the one thing that has saved his job is that, yes, he did get them and doing fine.
We missed on Garcia…twice. Lucky for the gophers there was off-the-court issue that brought him home / closer proximity to family. Christie isn’t from MN. Payne is good, not great (3rd ranked recruit in the state of MN for the class of 2022). Carrington…who cares, if you look at the advanced states, he is actually a net negative while on the floor since his offense is so bad. Fox…he’s a 7 or 8th man on an NCAA team at best…and he’s very old for NCAA basketball.

Do I need to list all top recruits we miss (just the last few years)…
2020
Suggs - Gonzaga - nba
Dawson Garcia -marquette
Dain dainja- baylor
Keratin Walton -UNC
STEVEN CROWL - badgers
Ben Carlson- badgers
Madsen brothers - Cincy
2021
Holmgren - Stud in NBA (Gonzaga)
Tschetter- Michigan
2022
Holloman - MSU
ALIGBE - BC
2023
Chatman - OSU
Winter - badgers
Kapke- Butler
Bath - Drake
2024
McAndrew - Creighton
Freitag / Robison - badgers
Johnson-arigu- miami (FL)

Over a third of these players didn't have offers from the Gophers. Dain Dainja had academic concerns out of high school, so the Gophers backed off. We backed off of Daniel Freitag several months before he committed to Wisconsin, since we prioritized Isaac Asuma as our point guard prospect, and got him. Camden Heide and Tre Holloman both committed within like 3 months of Ben Johnson getting hired. Jalen Suggs, Chet Holmgren, and Kendall Brown were all 5 stars who committed to national championship contenders, and were one and dones. I didn't get the sense we ever pursued Steven Crowl or Will Tschetter very hard. They had offers because Pitino sent out a token offer to every high major recruit in the state, seemingly whether he actually wanted them on the team or not. Ben Johnson doesn't seem to do this so much.

Kerwin Walton, oh well, we lost a recruiting battle to North Carolina, no shame in that. I thought we initially went after Walton, then flipped to focusing on Gabe Madsen, but maybe backed off of Madsen because he was gonna bring his brother as a package deal, and the brother maybe wasn't a high major player. Gabe Madsen and Ben Carlson are both at Utah now. Ben Carlson is a bench player but Madsen appears to have steadily improved throughout his college career and is now the second leading scorer on his team. I saw Madsen mentioned by some 247 guy as a fringe NBA prospect along with Cam Christie.

Nolan Winter is one of the only players here that I think we really wanted, pursued hard, had a good shot at, and just got beat.

Taison Chatman I think both sides backed off when it seemed like getting NIL money early on was important for Chatman, and that wasn't something we could promise. Chatman actually intrigues me as a potential transfer prospect this offseason. If he's actually homesick, not enjoying the situation at Ohio State, coach just got fired, maybe he and Ben Johnson give each other a second look in a few weeks here. I know he's barely played this year, but I feel like it's not that common that a top 50 high school prospect just isn't at all cut out for high major basketball. But it's Ben Johnson's job to figure that out, not mine. Another guard with some size, handling, and scoring ability sounds like a great add, if Chatman is up to the task.

I can only imagine how the board will treat Garcia and/or Payne, especially, if they decide to go somewhere else next season. Some of the venom Battle received was over the top ridiculous.
I think the venom is directly related to where they would go. Battle staying in conference raised the temperature exponentially.

appreciate the details, I was just listing off all the recruits in MN (there are more) who don’t come to the Gophers to make a point to a previous poster that it’s already a problem that we don’t get the best in-state talent (because we don’t).

100%. Had Battle left the Big Ten the attitude towards him would have been much different. Would have been similar to when Gabe left. People would have been annoyed but it would have been in a much more muted way.

Not only that, he went through senior night and was acknowledged. It was said he was pursuing pro opportunities. Good for him.

Then he transferred to another school in the Big Ten. Dick move.
