That was in 2003. What we're talking about is Brewster getting beaten like a rented mule by one of the worst Michigan teams in the past 50 years. If you really want to compare 2003 to 2008, at least we had a chance to win in 2003 and should have. No excuse for not winning that game. In 2008, against a terrible Michigan team we got thrashed. At home. That had NOTHING to do with 2003.
I don't disagree with your point that Mason's teams had some monumental meltdowns, but we fired him for that, finally. When Maturi was bungling his way through the hiring process, the last thought on my mind was that he'd solve that problem by brining in someone who wouldn't even show up so we couldn't lose big leads.
Maturi made a mistake. It's up to Brewster to prove it was a mistake worth making. We're getting better players. What will we do with them? Is the way Jack Simmons blossomed under Brewster is a glimpse of things to come? I mean, a TE coach is really the only experience he had, so we really can't expect that kind of meteoric success to be everywhere in only two years.
By the arguments of the folks on this board, we shouldn't expect much this year, what with brand new coordinators and all. It takes time to learn the spread. I mean the pro-set offense. And three DCs in three years? How can Brewster expect to build a program this way?
I suppose rather than take a critical look at his performance, we can just blame Mason for the bad hires at OC and DC/lack of ability to keep Roof here have to date defined the Brewster era -- more so than the recruiting, unfortunately.
And while we're at it. What point of 55-0 is lose little? I guess playing one of the most anemic offenses in the big ten at home is a recipe to give up 55 points. Or maybe Brewster just let Mason call that game for old times sake. That must have been it. If Brewster would have not been so nice to Glen, we'd have won that game going away.
We've got enough problems without hanging on to the ones we fired. Move on.
