Buried in the disappointment of Wednesday’s loss to No. 9 Maryland — the Gophers surrendered a 17-point lead — was Gophers point guard Marcus Carr setting a program record for assists in a season. He tied Arriel McDonald’s mark of 179 in 1993-94 with an alley-oop to Jarvis Omesa and set his own mark in the second half.
Carr now has 182 assists with three regular-season games left and the Toronto native is eight away from breaking former Ray Williams’ program record of 118 in conference games. Carr is averaging 6.7 assists a game this season, second only to Michigan’s Zavier Simpson’s 7.9.

Coach Richard Pitino sees two “remarkable” things in Carr’s achievement: Carr is only a sophomore and he should have a lot more assists.

“Doing that in a season where we haven’t hit a lot of shots — pretty impressive,” Pitino said Friday. “We talk a lot about assist to jump shots and he’s had some games where if a couple of those shots fall, he could have had 15 assists instead of 10. … He’s a good player, durable player, tough player, confident player.”
