Tommy Olson has a personal reason to celebrate Minnesota's first Jan. 1 bowl appearance in 52 seasons. His father, former Gophers lineman Ed Sr., is "living life large right now."
"He always told me that if the Gophers ever got into a Jan. 1 bowl game, he'd take us and do it up big," Olson said Friday. "I've pretty much followed his footsteps all my life, so it feels great to give this to my Dad as a Christmas present.
"Everybody in our family is excited, but nobody more than my Dad."
