The Gophers have averaged 142.7 yards rushing per game, the lowest in Kill's four-plus seasons in Minnesota. This year's average is a 34 percent decrease from the 215.5 yards the Gophers rushed per game in 2014 with record-setting running back David Cobb.

Kent State presented the Gophers' offense with new or varied schemes, including stacking one side of the defense with more players.

"It's a different picture for those kids as they're trying to go out and block," offensive coordinator Matt Limegrover said. "That's when those issues happen. That's when somebody gets missed. That's when the big plays happen on the other side."

On Tuesdays and Wednesdays, the Gophers' first-team offense goes against the first-team defense for about 30 plays each day, while defensive coordinator Tracy Claeys said other programs will have the first teams play against scout teams.

But come Saturdays, Claeys said his defense must be unaffected by what the offense does.

"Their job (on defense) is to hold them to one less point than our offense scores," Claeys said. "That's the bottom line no matter how you look at things."
