Official "Viva Las Vegas!!" Thread - Trip Plans, Ticket Qs, Tailgating, Casino Advice

I'm prepared to walk if I have to. Once I touch down in Vegas, nothing....and I mean NOTHING is keeping me from getting to Sam Boyd on Thursday night.....well maybe the judicial system if I get in trouble doing my pest Prince Herry in public.

When I called limos.com, the cost for a one way trip was $84 on the 24 passenger van, but she told me that because it is a game, they would not allow 2 one way pick-ups. I don't know how Gopher.nation got around this. I have 6 guys going and would be willing to split a big bus, but I don't want to book it and have nobody else show and be on the hook for it. Advantage to booking if for the full time is we could stop at a liquor store along the way and pick up tailgating supplies. Also, they would be waiting for us at games end, however, it is a lot more expensive. Not sure what a cab ride costs or how easy it is to get a ride after the game.

If there are 6 of you, rent a car for one day. It would cost you about $15 per person to get a van. Now forget I ever mentioned that if your all going to be drinking a lot.

I know groups are leaving this week-end and making a family vacation out of it. My wife and I leave early game day. If your flying, put on you maroon or gold shirts for the flight. Show them at McCarran airport that we travel well. Most of all, everyone have a safe trip. Have fun and lets bring home a W. JERRY< JERRY< JERRY.

Rent a car? I'm just hoping I can still walk by game time, let alone drive.

NO!!! and they have security boarding and exiting the express buses frequently checking for paid fares. Some of the express buses don't have fare boxes so you have to go to a kiosk and purchase a ticket in advance like the lightrail here.
Can you transport beer on a city bus? Some people in my party think we will be able to bring coolers onto the bus and just tailgate anywhere because its Vegas and there are no laws. My idea is to rent a car fill it with beer and drive it it to the tailgate lot while the other people in our party take the bus.

Be careful. Las Vegas has laws, ones that get enforced. The place is oddly conservative in some ways. I believe that the school district's sex ed curriculum is abstinence based. I would check about the rules/laws on the bus and for tailgating. Have fun!

minnfan - try out bell trans website . . . the hourly rate was 88 for the bus, but since the stadium is "outside" their zone they added an extra half hour per trip . . . and i spoke with 2 representatives over 2 days and both said it could be split into 2 one way trips . . .

What Happens in Vegas Stays in Vegas?

Wrong! Just ask Prince Harry. You might take a cue from his experience.

I would have to believe that you can bring cases of beer on the bus, however, actually drinking them on the bus would likely be frowned upon. If you have to have a beer during that 15-20 min ride out, then get a limo or private bus. If you can hold off, the bus will likely work just fine.

Looking forward to seeing all the maroon and gold at the airports. I'll be sporting my #5 jersey all day, except while in the pool...

I think I can last one hour with out drinking. Still wondering if carrying beer into the lots by foot is strictly enforced?

Still wondering if carrying beer into the lots by foot is strictly enforced?

Gloved, you knew I couldn't leave you hanging on this one!

I just called the guy that runs the Star Nursery Field. I asked if the rule was absolute or if it was situational - like they aren't going to allow noticeably drunk people or open containers through, but a couple of sober guys could walk in with a 12-pack. He said the rule is pretty strictly enforced as written, meaning no one can walk in with alcohol. He said they instituted the policy about three years ago because they had fans walking into the lot and everyone in the group would have a 30-pack in tow. In his words "there was just way too much alcohol in that area."

So, the bigger question now - who is actually driving to the lot and wants to make some easy cash by basically operating as a liquor store for your fellow Gopher fans within the confines of the Star Nursery Field?

Thanks brother! Great minds think alike. Sounds like someone in our group already has a rental car lined up and plans on getting to the lot 4 hours early.
We might have to get a second car depending on how much beer we plan to drink and if we can get two sober drivers. Parkinglotgopher hope to see you down in Vegas.

If I bring some cash, can I purchase/chip in on some beer you'll going to be driving into the tailgate lot?

Maybe? Depends how much beer and liquor you can fit in a Aveo. Our group is still finalizing plans. I'll keep you updated. How much beer you thinking?

PLG - we're going to be tailgating there - shoot me an email with the details of your group, we can see if we can work something out :)

Is everyone planning on going to the Star Nursery Lots? It'd be nice to tailgate there but I'm thinking that getting beer in there would be too much of a hassle.

Do remember that Sam Boyd has both beer and hard liquor available in the stadium -- you can always front end load at the Trop (or your own mix on your way down to the Trop), take the bus and then continue in the stadium. As much as I like tailgating, drinking on a concrete slab with the heat index around 130 degrees sounds miserable to me.

I think the Star Nursery lots are grass so that should help a little. The (free) south lots are gravel.

Greetings Gopher fans!

Getting pumped up for the season opener, as I'm sure most of you are.

I'm seeing a lot of posts regarding safe/sober transportation to Sam Boyd stadium. I'f you are in need of a ride and are traveling from the Strip, our group has booked a shuttle bus that will be departing from City Center (center Strip) and returning after the game for $10 per person round-trip. We have a few open seats so if you or anyone else you know is in need of a ride, email or give me a call and I'll give you the details.

Since it sounds like walking into the Sky Nursery Lots with beer is not an option, does anyone know if congregating and drinking beers in the dirt lots to the South and East is frowned upon as well?

Seems like a lot of people have lined up transportion to get them there, but very few have vehicles that will be going into the SN lots. Maybe other tailgatae vagabonds like our group can gather somewhere in the dirt lots instead.

I've attended several games at Sam Boyd stadium but have never tailgated there so I can't speak to what is and is not allowed. I did recently stumble upon a couple of reviews of Sam Boyd Stadium on yelp.com. Perhaps there's something useful here:

http://www.yelp.com/biz/sam-boyd-stadium-tailgate-las-vegas

I did notice that at least one of the reviewers attended the UNLV/UNR game so their review might paint a rosier picture of the Sam Boyd tailgating schene than what we'll experience next Thursday. This is like comparing the pre-game tailgating at Minnesota/Skonnie to, say, Minnesota/New Mexico State. The stadium is literally located out in the desert so I can tell you to expect it to be hot and dusty. Make sure you pack some bottled water in your coolers in addition to the ice cold beer. Regardless, we're pumped for the game and the season!

UNLV gameday shuttle

Just in case anyone else is interested, we're down to 2 seats.

Hey Gang,

It's been years since I've posted, probably back in the Mason era, but have always read this board. My wife and I live in Park City, UT and will be driving to the game next week. We'll be in the Star Nursery lot with a maroon F150 full of beer and brats, for those who want to drop by. I'm from Grand Rapids originally and went to the U in the 80s (Holtz and Foggie), but am a bigger Gopher fan now than when I was a student! For those who aren't going to have a vehicle, I think you just need to show your tickets to walk into the lot, but it sounds like they won't let you have a case of beer under your arm. I'll plan on having several cases on board unless I don't get any responses here. P.S. - It won't be Utah beer!! Go Gophers!!

My group has rented a 15 passenger van for Thursday with a few seats reserved for beer!

We will be arriving in Vegas on Thursday, not only to celebrate the Gopher opener, but also the marriage of our daughter on Saturday. I would like to invite everyone to swing by parking space #13 in the Star Nursery Fields and say hi, and wish the bride and groom good luck. Also, bring your dollar bills cause we may have a pre-wedding dollar dance. And yes Dr. Don, I will make sure AuEGO4 sends you pictures. Ski-U-Mah!!!!

I for one am very excited for all of these celebrations to occur within my family. Lucky number 13 will be rocking. Gopherlady has mentioned she will be making an appearance. Beer will be cold, weather will be hot, and there will be a whole lot of swagger in our a$$. Or maybe that's something else...
Ski U Mah!!!!!
