SERIES DOMINANCE

Of the Big Ten teams that joined the conference prior to 2011, Ohio State has a better winning percentage against Minnesota (86.7%) than it does against every other team except Indiana (86.8%).

The Buckeyes are 46-7 all-time against the Golden Gophers and are on an 11-game winning streak against the Minneapolis-based outfit dating back to the year 2000. Minnesota’s last win over Ohio State came by a 29-17 score in John Cooper’s final year.

All told, the Buckeyes have won 27 of their last 28 games against the Golden Gophers. They’ll look to make it 28 out of 29 in their final home game of the 2023 season.

Go Gophers!!

That makes a lot of sense because the gophers and Ohio state only played each other 9 times before 1950 and only 12 times before 1967

There are more games against Nebraska than Ohio state.

When Nebraska joined the conference….they had played the same number of games against Nebraska and Ohio state

Minnesota has played Ohio State 53 times in the 111 years they have both been in the Big Ten.

Minnesota has played Nebraska 64 times, even though they have been conference foes for 12 years.

Minnesota only played Ohio State 10 times before 1965, often playing teams like Nebraska instead. Had Minnesota faced Ohio State more in Gopher glory days the series would likely be more even.

In the 1930s, the Gophers and Ohio State were consistently the strongest teams but never played a single game.

My guess is that this is a relic of the two teams being the furthest apart in the traditional Big Ten, and the series didn't get going until plane travel became more common in the 1960s.
