FSN: Gophers' Williams eagerly awaits learning NFL fate

As he's prepared for the next few days, Williams has talked to a few former Minnesota teammates who have been through the same draft process. That includes defensive lineman Ra'Shede Hageman, who went to Atlanta in the second round last year, and safety Brock Vereen, a fourth-round pick of Chicago later in the 2014 draft.

Though Williams has a good chance to go higher than both of those former Gophers, the emotions and nerves over the next few days may very well be similar.

"They just said, 'Take it for what it is. Your name's going to get called. It's just a matter of when,'" Williams said. "'Take the opportunity and make the most of it.'"

MN Daily: Former Gophers look to NFL draft

Between the time the NFL Draft kicks off Thursday night and ends Saturday, Maxx Williams, David Cobb, Damien Wilson and Cedric Thompson hope to hear their names called.

The Minnesota Daily caught up with the former Gophers to talk about the draft process and conducted research to predict when they’re likely to be selected this weekend.

Cedric Thompson
Year: Senior
Position: Safety

Thompson came into the NFL Draft process overlooked. While Williams, Cobb and Wilson received invites to the NFL Combine, the former Gophers safety waited for his chance to show what he could do.

He did just that at Minnesota’s Pro Day in March, running a sub-4.40 40-yard dash. Since then, Thompson has been contacted by more than 20 NFL teams and met face-to-face with half a dozen of them.

Of the former Gophers with a good chance of being drafted, Thompson is definitely the least known. He didn’t record as many tackles as Wilson. He didn’t spearhead Minnesota’s offense like Cobb or Williams. But he led most of Minnesota’s offseason workouts, is smart, hits hard and showed at Pro Day he has the speed to play in open space.

Projection:
Late-round selection or an undrafted free agent.

What they're saying:

I’ve been very fortunate to be a part of a good portion of Cedric’s journey throughout college and [to] see just how much he’s grown in the last four years is remarkable.

— Charlotte Paguyo, Thompson’s longtime girlfriend

Go Gophers!!

There is no link, I live in Waconia, my dad works with some of his extended family and that was what was being rumored by the family.

They are having a draft party at his relatives bar Chumly's bar in Waconia ESPN is expected to be there tonight.

Maxx to Philly, then get ready for Tebow to Williams show.

Sure are a lot of first round cbs getting their heads around. \ducks

Mediocre blocker. Great catcher.

Has not shown ability to get seperate on when covered.

Ever notice most of his catches were when the other team forgot to cover him?

For next year, our tight ends probably won't be able to make the ridiculous sideline catches, but I am not worried about them being open just as much. Him being open was a schematics thing, not a great route running/elite separation ability thing.

Williams will be a good 2nd or 3rd round pick for someone.

Williams to New York Giants or Atlanta Falcons.

Bummed that Williams didn't break our first round drought, but certainly didn't expect it after his combine performance. A couple of really good landing spots for Maxx in round two: Atlanta with Matt Ryan and New Orleans with Drew Brees. Both guys have used the TE a lot in their careers and neither has a great option right now.

I could definitely see Atlanta taking Maxx at 42. If he's still there at 45, why wouldn't the Vikings consider taking him? The Vikings could use another pass catcher and Rudolph can't stay healthy. Even if he does stay healthy, they could run a pretty potent 2 TE offense, with Wallace and Patterson (if he figures it out) or Charles Johnson on the outside.

I've already seen 3 second round mock drafts with Maxx to the Falcons. Would be nice to see him and Ra'Shede together.

Very disappointed in how far he fell but at least he has a nice QB.

Trestman is their OC now too. He should do well there.
