The University of Kansas announced Wednesday that head basketball coach Bill Self and assistant coach Kurtis Townsend will miss the first four games of the 2022-23 season to serve a self-imposed suspension relating to KU’s NCAA infractions case.

According to a release announcing the suspensions, KU informed the NCAA’s Independent Resolution Panel last week that it was self-imposing several sanctions in response to its ongoing basketball case, which originated in 2017.

The NCAA’s case against KU, which includes allegations of five Level 1 infractions, a charge of head coach responsibility and a tag of lack of institutional control, was officially accepted by the newly formed and soon to be eliminated Independent Accountability Resolution Process on July 1, 2020, nearly one year after KU received its initial notice of allegations from the NCAA in September 2019.

Self and Townsend both will coach during Thursday’s exhibition game against Pitt State at Allen Fieldhouse and begin serving the suspensions with KU’s regular season opener next Monday against Omaha.

Veteran KU assistant Norm Roberts will serve as the Jayhawks’ interim coach while Self serves the suspension. Roberts was previously the head coach at St. John’s. KU also added former Florida Gulf Coast and East Carolina head coach Joe Dooley — a former Self assistant at Kansas — to its coaching staff this offseason.

The FBI’s investigation into corruption in college basketball recruiting was first announced in September of 2017.

According to the release announcing the move, the suspensions are being handed down as steps that KU hopes will move the NCAA process forward.

“Throughout this process, we have had ongoing conversations with all the involved parties,” KU Chancellor Douglas Girod said in the release. “We believe the actions we are announcing today move us closer to resolving this matter. We look forward to commenting further when this process is fully resolved. Until then, I want to reiterate our unwavering support of coach Self and our men’s basketball program.”

In addition to the suspensions, KU announced several other self-imposed penalties. They include:

• The absence of Self and Townsend from all off-campus recruiting-related activities for four months (April through July 2022).

• The reduction of four official visits during this academic year and in 2023-24.

• The reduction of three total scholarships in Men’s Basketball; to be distributed over the next three years.

• The implementation of a six-week ban on recruiting communications, a six-week ban on unofficial visits and a thirteen-day reduction in the number of permissible recruiting days during the 2022-23 calendar year.

• No official visits for 2022 Late Night in the Phog.

The first and last items on the list above already have been served.

When asked about the absence of official visitors at Late Night last month, Self said the program did not host any that night because they already had three players committed in the 2023 class and we’re not actively looking for more at the time.

“We are hopeful these difficult self-imposed sanctions will assist in bringing the case to a conclusion,” KU Athletic Director Travis Goff said in the release. “Until then, we will continue to focus on supporting our outstanding men’s basketball student-athletes and coaches. Per confidentiality guidelines related to infraction cases, we are unable to comment in depth until there is full resolution of this matter.”

Added Self: “Coach Townsend and I accept and support KU’s decision to self-impose these sanctions. We are in good hands with coach Roberts, and I am confident that he will do a great job on the bench leading our team. I am proud of the way our guys have handled this situation and I look forward to returning to the bench for our game against NC State.”

Go Gophers!!
4 whole games? And "no recruiting" during a period that already passed? That's holding yourself accountable. No NCAA action needed, clearly.

I don't see any any clause stipulating we promise not to spend more than $500,000 on any individual NIL package for the incoming recruits for a period of two years. This covers the period of the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons.
It would fit right in with their others but they probably already violated it

We should bring back Trevor Mbakwe & Royce White...like we should have had on our NCAA team that returned it's top 9 players. Add them & a T-Wolves player or 2 to Battle & Garcia.

Play the games...and let the NCAA try to beat us in court in 3 years.

Are you guys mad because they didn't self penalize on the same level that U did back at the end of the Clem era and destroy their program for the next 20 years? Call them what you want but they don't appear to be stupid.

True. We're the masters of self-penalizing. Every time our BB team is a contender.

True. But the NCAA is who vacated the season. Some teams getting special treatment....others don't. Both Louisville and USC had national titles vacated. Michigan had a couple Final Fours vacated. The Gophers aren't the only ones. Difference is that those other teams have other history to hang their hats on.

The real issue here is that the rules/punishments aren't applied equally.

The U of M leadership decided to make an example out of the future basketball program and punish the fan base to virtue signal. They were mortified and debated getting rid of the basketball program permanently to protect their reputation as educators rather than just cleaning up and hiring a smart negotiator to minimize the damage to the basketball program/fanbase.

Kansas should probably fire Self and try to run a clean program moving forward - but good for them for not having complete buffoons in leadership.

I am waiting for one of these schools to file an antitrust lawsuit against the NCAA over penalties. Be good to finally get rid of them. They really provide no value.

Yup. We self-destroyed our Final Four team & momentum. Really destroyed the program.

We were the National Championship favorite...all set to add Royce White & Trevor Mbakwe to our NCAA team that returned it's top 9 players. But we booted them both out and destroyed team moral. Many transfers.

And we kicked our only big man, returning Big Ten Defensive POY (and good scorer) Reggie Lynch, off of Pitino's best team. I remember the announcers saying we looked like a Final Four contender as we were winning games and were ranked Top-15.

The Self suspension is a joke. Kansas is trying to impress the NCAA that it means business and thus try to minimize the punishment, which should be loss of three scholarships, no tournament for 3 years, 20% cut in recruit visits, and fire Self. At least Arizona fired Sean Miller for his lack of control and culpability. The big boys always get a slap on the hand.
