Video Minnesota Gophers Football Team Room: Time Lapse

Go Gophers!!

I thought this was a nice little nod to the new wallpaper in the Gopher team meeting room...

Unfortunately a read through the yahoo comments below leaves me with the impression the new wallpaper will cause the US to be overtaken by Haiti, and the nation's future is now in jeopardy thanks to Gopher football.

I'm not sure if there would have been as many negative responses if the walls had instead been covered in child porn.

It is hilarious how many comments relate to high tuition costs. I am sure the cost of tuition would have gone down across the board had they not gotten a custom paint job in one room on campus.

Some people just use any reason to rant about how much money is wasted on trivial things like football, rather than in the classroom, even if it is just a wallpaper job that any kid in his dorm room could probably do as well. I think it was a good way to make their room unique without spending a fortune. Looks good to me.

Invariably, the people who bitch about athletics getting too much money and attention at the expense of the academic mission of the University are the same people who make up the least academically rigorous departments and colleges at the U. I'm looking at you, CLA faculty and students.

Not to mention the fact that football, hockey, and basketball are the only revenue sports at the U that actually cover their own costs, the costs of all the other sports, and (at least this year) have some left over that goes in to the general U coffers. Not sure how they should be held accountable to spending $5,000 on a custom wallpaper job when they bring in more than they spend.

This in-fighting has to stop. People have to realize that a very successful athletic department can help attract top-notch students, faculty, and donation money down the line by creating a campus environment that leaves students with excitement and pride in their university. It also elevates the image of the school nationally in our (ever increasing) sports media coverage. Not sure how this is so hard to understand - athletics and academics are not mutually exclusive.

Good call. I think they should chop this college into smaller colleges. Aside from CLA, I think other colleges and schools are doing very well.
The comments at yahoo make me chuckle as well. People are downright ignorant. As far as I concern, most of class room facilities for students are much much better than this room for football players. When I visited that building for onestop service, I was somewhat surprised.

The new facilities at Carlson as well as the construction of the new rec center and various research buildings alone demonstrates that the U is heavily invested in the rest of the student population. It would probably also focus their argument on "unnecessary construction" contributing to higher tuition in addition to football.

Aside from that, I think the meeting room looks great.

The comments about the classroom facilities is crazy. If any of those commentors would have a clue what the classrooms are like at the U, they would shut up. When I was there 6 years ago, the classrooms were really nice. The crappiest of them all was the Science Classroom Building, which got torn down and replaced by a beautiful new building.

I agree, academics and sports can and do coexist. When you look the BCS schools, they tend to be very good schools. The Big Ten schools are excellent. Sports are the most visible feature of a school, each game on TV is like an ad for the school. How many schools might we rarely even hear about if it wasn't for sports.

Those who rail against sports, thinking that their tuition is paying for it are mistaken. The money comes from TV revenue, ticket sales, merchandise sales, stadium revenues and donations. If sports went away, so would this money. Killing the goose that laid the golden egg doesn't work.

At the same time, we have to acknowledge that education is the purpose of the school. If you want a team unfettered by academic concerns, there's always the NFL. I've not seen any evidence that complaints about spending on sports comes just from "undesirable" academic programs, that's just axe-grinding.

My question, do they offer the wall paper sized for my Man cave?

I think it looks cool as hell. Very innovative.

We haver nearly a 1200% independent athletic department. People are dumb.

That said, [INSERT ATTENDANCE JOKE HERE].
