I have trouble remembering all the various ranking stats but is FPI the one developed initially to beat the spread for as many games as possible over a season?

If so it’s not about a given team (even if ESPN wants it to be).

Many of the rankings struggle with under performing teams because you can’t let the fact that Nebraska underperforms dominate a model and ruin your predictions of other games.

Rather than blame the math maybe it just means Texas and Nebraska really do underperform…
 

Any model that depends on recruiting rankings is not valid.
NE has not underperformed relative to anything.
They have simply had a miserable conference record because they have been poorly coached and too many recruits have left.
Frost has depended on his QBs as running backs and by the quarter they are beaten up and make mistakes.
His ass't coaches were there because they came with him from FL
