Getting rid of the automatic qualifiers based on the criteria they have used in recent years is a great idea. I'm surprised it took them so long to eliminate this qualification (although they suspended it for the abbreviated 16 team NIT a few years ago). The previous automatic qualifier rule (any team that finished first in the conference regular season but didn't get picked for NCAA tournament) was a dumb rule because 1) some of these teams were really low rated and 2) they interpreted this rule quite literally so that if two teams from a lowly conference tied for first place in the regular season, they both were automatic qualifiers. This automatic qualifying rule resulted in more deserving teams (from both P6 and non-P6) not getting into the tournament.

However, I don't think they went far enough. How about NO AUTOMATIC QUALIFIERS? A tournament called the National Invitational Tournament shouldn't have automatic qualifiers.
 



Are these changes in response to that news from a few weeks back about Fox thinking of creating a tournament for non-NCAA teams from their conference partners?
 


Ugh. The worst thing about this? If either of the top two NET qualifiers from these power conferences have a record below .500, they would still be invited to the NIT.

No team deserves a postseason when having a record below .500.

Or a team that goes 6-12 in its conference and ends up over .500 because they scheduled all cupcakes in the 300s at home in the noncon.
