I am really curious to hear what others think about the move Michigan State just made in regards to the teams name. I would hate to see this become a trend but given that one of the biggest names in college basketball just did it, it won't shock me to see this spread like wildfire.

Honestly thought it might be a joke when I first read the story but sadly this is really happening.

Is this really any worse than "Now entering the Case IH Red zone!" etc.? Take the $$. It's desperate times.
yes, this is very different. Sponsorships as part of the game have been around for a long time. This is the team name. Not a new concept in sports completely but new for college sports and could start a really bad trend.

We're about to have to watch the Twins on a network named after a casino with constant bombardment to place wagers being floated on the screen. I guess I can't get worked up about this.

Great. Now we have college teams now actually being "presented" by corporate donators.

What a freaking joke...

I too thought it was satire when I first say it come across my Twitter feed. Similar to Howeda, I'm not going to lose sleep over this, but the shameless hypocrisy is overflowing when athletic departments are taking on corporate naming rights for the team while also pledging allegiance to the ideals of amateurism.

You don’t have to watch them?

this sort of sponsorship would be easier to take if the players (student-athletes) benefited in any way other than with new facilities also named for a sponsor or a donor.

Agreed. And to be clear, I think this is a complete joke but I'm not surprised by it and won't be when other teams go the same route.

We all know where this is headed.....

One really bad "off the field incident" could change all of this.

to that point, have all of the MSU rape, abuse and cover up lawsuits been finalized?
Wonder if the sponsorship is tied to these aspects of the program?
