PG Mitchell 15. Hawkins 25
SG Carrington 20 Mitchell 15 Hawkins 5
SF Christie 24 , Carrington 2, Betts 8, Ihnen 6

if there are no injuries, it is difficult getting enough minutes for everyone. In this model, JOJ and Ihnen and maybe Fox and Betts have not enough minutes. Mitchell, Hawkins, Garcia should all see north of 30 minutes. Carrington, Payne ( because of foul trouble), Christie should see in the 20s. That leaves 55 minutes for Betts, Ihnen, JOJ and Fox. Do they all play or do two emerge for forward minutes?
 

Payne is going to get 30 minutes and I think Ihnen and JOJ will get more. Who do they take from? I don’t know. I think Fox and Wilson will be matchup specialists

I think Wilson gives us five fouls and a few rebounds to protect Payne and Garcia in difficult match ups. Payne definitely gets 30 minutes assuming he stays out of foul trouble.

I just took a look at Payne last year. I agree with what you say above. He average 22 minutes per game last year and got 4 fouls 4 times and fouled out twice. Not so bad for a frosh. He will clean some of that up - he had some silly ones and some offensive fouls that he can be coached out of.
So, yes, I think he gets 30 minutes. I like Wilson to come in against Edey or some other big that is not super mobile and attempt to slow them down. I would think Fox would help with 6-8- 6-9 types like a Crowl or Wahl. I hope CBJ looks for matchups to deal the minutes rather than a set game after game deal. We have some pieces like Ihnen, Fox and Wilson that can be a real bother to the right opposition.
 

I think we see Carrington and possibly Christie at the point for maybe 5 minutes at most a game as well. Also, Garcia will get 30+ a game. It would be silly to have our best player on the floor for less.
 


I doubt Payne will average 30 mpg. That's pretty rare for big guys of his type...between fatigue and foul trouble, post players tend to play less minutes than stud guards/wings do.

I don't think Wilson will be in the regular rotation, but definitely see him being used against the Edey, Crowl, Dainja, etc types.

Betts (unproven) and Fox/Ihnen (health) are complete wild cards.

Keinys and Reader will probably redshirt? Ramberg will play in emergencies, and Purcell in garbage time.

Ben really needs this to happen.
 

Garcia will be closer to 35 minutes a game then 30.
Mitchell will get north of 30 minutes
Payne will be in the 26-28 minutes if we are lucky

any sort of rotation outside of that IMO is a wild guess.

This response is fact based.
 



Ihnen will get more minutes because he can guard the 2, 3, 4 and on occasion the 5 positions.
 

By the start of B1G play: This is essentially play 8 trust 7, with Betts and Fox getting token minutes.

PG Mitchell 30; Hawkins 10
SG Christie 25; Carrington 10; Hawkins 5
SF Ihnen 25 , JOJ 10, Betts 5
PF Garcia 25; JOJ 15

Oturu got 33 minutes per game in year 2 and he was a foul machine in year one

I love this time of year! Can’t wait for the “How are we going to have enough minutes for all these wonderful players” question. 🙃 Somehow the minutes go to the deserving players, and the question answers itself. My two cents.

Hawkins will play way more than 15, and Carrington will play way more than 10.
 



Keep in mind, even though Ben has 12 guys he could give minutes to...he has stated he wants to play 7 guys. So after a few preseason games we got a couple Big Ten games...will we be down to 7 guys?
I think you could make an easy case for 11 guys deserving an opportunity to compete. 12 with Wilson. How does it shake out? Who are the top 7? Seems pretty wide open to me. Some guys haven't played much, some guys have been hurt but that group has talent.
Gonna be interesting....we better see everybody in these early cupcakes.

Ben also went from guaranteeing they wouldn't be last to now saying the first 2 years were what they expected. He seems to change depending on the direction of the wind. I feel like the play 7 comment was because he literally only had 7 players he could put on the court at the time.

He will play more than 7. I believe the old adage among CBB coaches is play 8 trust 7. Ben wouldn't be the only one. But this is a roster that begs him to go deeper and use that depth to play relentless defense. There are some good offensive players on the roster but no great offensive players. If they are going to win, it is going to be with defensive effort, using numbers.

Yep totally agree, we've all seen what happens late in the year when you've relied on 7 all season.
 


my hope is that the minutes will change depending on the opponent.

Some nights - based on the opponent and matchups - certain players will see more minutes and certain players will see less.

but other nights, with a different opponent and different matchups - the minutes could change considerably. injuries and foul trouble will also impact minutes played.

I think the 3 constants are Mitchell, Hawkins and Garcia.

Wilson and Fox are two big unknows for this season, but I think we'll see more Center minutes from Wilson than for Fox, with of course Payne seeing the most.

Have to assume Payne’s minutes go up. Johnson, thus far, has a penchant for asking for too many for a couple of players. Garcia probably low 30’s again. Knowing me, they will win these easy games and I will get sucked into thinking they are deep and are going to be the surprise squad of the conference.
Hawkins, Christie and Mitchell…..really hoping they can defend and shoot decent.

If the starters are Hawkins/Mitchell/JOJ/Garcia/Payne-they will all see close to 30+/gm I'm guessing. Injuries, match ups and streaks will move the needle a little. There could be some movement in the 2/3 spot for Christie and Carrington if they are playing well. I would love to be surprised by Betts, Ihnen and Fox.

So is jumping from a walk-on at Morehead State to a junior college team to the Big Ten but that didn't stop Dre Matthieu.
 

My guess is Garcia will play the most. Both transfer guards should play bigger minutes. Payne will play as much as he can. Beyond that I don't know and prefer to be surprised.
 

Hawkins has had some decent games. Probably his best stat wise was against Villanova as a freshman, 16 points along with 11 assists. 11 and 5 against Georgetown that same season. 12 points 5 assists tallied in the Notre Dame contest.
Sophomore season he had 14 points, 2 assists vs Kentucky. Wyoming he was 17 and 6. And Kansas he scored 12 and had 8 assists. Small sample, but decent numbers.
