Is it a big ten tradition for MN to be the first bt game of the new season? Seems like it.

More than a decade now. Excluding the 2020 year, last season opener not on a Thursday evening was Vs. USC at the Coliseum.

It's more of a Minnesota tradition than it is a Big Ten tradition.
Last couple years the Big Ten has had "week 0" games that preceded even the Thursday night the Gophers opened on.
Yes. 2022 Nebraska vs. Northwestern in Ireland or wherever was a week 0 game, as was Nebraska/Illinois in 2021.
