Kiffin, Tenn being investigated by NCAA for using "hostesses" for recruits

The NY Times story with more detail:

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/09/sports/ncaafootball/09tennessee.html?_r=2&hpw

Two of Lattimore’s teammates, Brandon Willis and Corey Miller, have orally committed to Tennessee. Lattimore described the hostesses as “real pretty, real nice and just real cool.” He said he thought they had “a lot” of influence in Miller’s and Willis’s commitments to Tennessee.

Because of their influence on recruits, the recruiting hostesses have become popular with Tennessee fans. Bryce Brown, the country’s top running back recruit last year, who is a freshman at Tennessee, was pictured on a social networking site last year with a hostess. Other Tennessee hostesses have publicly conversed with prospects through Facebook and MySpace.

Some recruits say their influence is significant.

“You don’t want to go to a college where they ain’t pretty,” Lattimore said.

Go Gophers!!

Big deal. Florida has been using 'Gator Getters' for years and I'm sure all the big time programs have something similar. These girls volunteer to do this, but they know what is expected of them.

If I'm reading this correctly, the problem is that the "hostesses" are traveling outside the campus to prospective recruits homes, and there in lies the problem?

Simple solution....add the lovely co-eds to the coaching staff. :)

It has ever been thus.

I went out once with a girl who did this at a B12 school. The girls, who are recruited because they're clever and yummy, find the guys complete idiots (so I was told!).

It's obvious Kiffin is going to bend every rule he can to gain an advantage (based on this and his other secondary violations). He is quickly becoming the Calipari of college football. I don't see his tenure ending well at Tennessee.

Agree, ChemE. The problem is that when all is said and done, the University of Tennessee will suffer the consequences while coach Kiffin will move on with no penalties. THAT happens all the time in the Big Time World of College Athletics.

The only problem I would see is if the hostesses commit oral to get the recruits to give an oral commitment. Oops. Working blue this morning.

Bad joke aside, Kiffin is a pure clown.

50PoundHead...just think how much more money these hostesses would earn if they would become part of the Walmart Wallet Scams. :)

I actually had to look "Walmart Wallet Scam" up. I'm still laughing. Best joke I've read/heard in a long, long time.

I usually don't shop at Wal-Mart, but I'm heading over there right now.

Well, Head...you have heard Walmart's motto: "Save money, Live Better"!

In fact, Haugy#33 has bought up a year's supply of wallets. :)

I vote for Dr. Don as GH poster of the year for looking out for our well being while out shopping the holiday season. thanks again Dr. Don. I am gong to purchase a year's supply of wallets.

These are the kind of things that happen when a coach gets a job and then almost immediately goes out of his way to tick people off including high school communities, opposing coaches and conference commissioners. Is there anything to this? I have no idea, although some of the comments, especially those by Marcus Lattimore, certainly cast doubt in Tennessee's direction. In any case, this is the kind of microscope that folks in Knoxville should start getting used to as long as Kiffin is their head coach.

yawn

This is an old traditional practice for many schools from cave man days. Remember Anthony Davis from USC back in the seventies? He would come to our baseball games with his escort from USC. He was doing the recruiting with the party girl.

Do we have "Maroon Pride" ambassador's or "Gopher Getters", and if not, why not?

Just as long as they weren't called the "Gopher Holes," I'd be fine with it.

We sure could use some Gopherholes as a distraction from the threads here today.

Loved the headline, "NCAA eyes use of hostesses".

It's a bit scary really though. People go watch highschool recruits play all the time. Where is the line? the sign, or being hot?

Seems easy to unwittingly get your school into trouble just trying to show support.
