The Minnesota Golden Gophers will be taking on the Nebraska Cornhuskers THIS WEEK in the battle for the $5 Bits of Broken Chair Trophy!

The two teams have played each other 61 times, with Minnesota holding a 34-25-2 series lead. Minnesota dominated the series from 1900-1960, while Nebraska found success from 1963-1990. The series went on a hiatus until 2011, when the Huskers joined the Big Ten.

Since becoming members of the Big Ten, the series is tied, 5-5, with the Gophers winning three of the last four.

The trophy has been in play since 2014. Here's the history:

The $5 Bits of Broken Chair Trophy was established in 2014 prior to the November B1G football match-up between the University of Nebraska and the University of Minnesota. In an exchange on Twitter, accounts for Minnesota's mascot Goldy Gopher and a parody account of then Nebraska football coach called Fake Bo Pelini (@FauxPelini) made a wager.

Hey @FauxPelini, how about a friendly wager for this weekend's game? Team that gets the most points gets a conference win? Seem fair? — Goldy Gopher (@goldythegopher) November 20, 2014

@goldythegopher OK how about if we win you give me $5, if you win I get to smash a wooden chair over your back — Fake Bo Pelini (@FauxPelini) November 20, 2014

@FauxPelini just as long as we can turn that $5 or bits of broken chair into a trophy for next year's game — Goldy Gopher (@goldythegopher) November 20, 2014

Prior to the game, some University of Minnesota supporters went ahead and created that trophy. It was brought to Lincoln for the November 22, 2014 game and returned to Minneapolis after a 28-24 Golden Gopher victory.

The trophy was proudly displayed at University of Minnesota events by Goldy until the following year when it was transferred to the Husker squad. Nebraska players celebrated the 48-25 victory by passing the trophy around the locker room.

Leading up to the 2016 match-up, rumors began to circulate that the athletic departments of both Universities were planning to retire this unofficial tradition. Nebraska defeated Minnesota in Lincoln by a score of 24-17, but the trophy was nowhere to be seen.

For the better part of the next year a group of Husker fans, feeling a responsibility to the rivalry, plotted to recreate the vaunted symbol of friendly competition. With a new trophy in hand, Husker and Gopher fans are collaborating to use the trophy's popularity to benefit charitable organizations connected to each University.

While the trophy hasn't been officially recognized by the schools, it's become a beloved piece of rivalry hardware by fans. The series between Nebraska and Minnesota also has more games played than the official trophies that Nebraska has with Iowa and Wisconsin. The Huskers have played the Hawkeyes 51 times and the Badgers 14 times, compared to the Gophers 61 times.

Coming into the game, Minnesota is 3-2 coming off a bye while Nebraska is 3-4 after a close loss to No. 9 Michigan. The Gophers won the last meeting 24-17.

Found this on the Corn Nation website run by a guy who lives in Minnesota but is a die hard Nebraska fan.

And just for fun, here is his instant reaction after the Nebraska/Minnesota game last year. Classic.

Here is Jon Johnston's lament after the Michigan loss. He's helluva entertainment even to his family.

He is looking forward to Nebbie thumping the Gophers next week.

CAUTION: Losing to Minnesota got the last two Nebbie coaches fired. The saving grace is they are playing against the Gophers in October. Frost has a one-month headstart to redeem himself. Pellini and Riley were both turkeys after Thanksgiving.

This Nebraska team looks the best that I have seen in a while. They just seem to find ways to beat themselves. The Gophers have a ton of reasons to worry about Nebraska. They will come out like angry Murder Hornets.
