Illini get Tracy Abrams

Jerrance Howard is really doing well as #1 recruiter for Bruce Weber and the Illini.

That was a good "trade" (Howard to U of IL, Tracy Webster to UK) with Kentucky.

Just a soph

Illinois grabs its first recruit for 2011. This is a kid just beginning his 10th grade season. For the most part Tubby is still examining the 11 graders to see whom he offers. It will be interesting to see which strategy pays off. Getting in early to grab the good looking kids or waiting a while to let the cream go to the top before offering.

Illinois is going to be loaded a few years from now.

They will be good, we are getting better, Indiana should have rebounded by then, you have to think Michigan state and Wisconsin will always be good with Izzo/Ryan.

I'm thinking the Big Ten could be among the best in a few years.

It already is among the best...look at conference RPI. (#1)

The NCAA really needs to put a rule in place to prevent scholarship offers, and limit contact, until after a student has finished 10th grade. Coaches should also be more protective of their younger players.

Apparently Abrams is the kid everyone wants as a teammate. Illinois may have jumped on him early so that it helps them to recruit the other standouts from the 2011 class. A similar situation occured back in the day with Michigan's recruiting the Fab Five. Once they signed Juwan Howard it became much easier to recruit Webber/Rose/Smith/Jackson because they all wanted to play alongside Juwan.

Top 5 or 6 in Big 10 could be Top 25 in the nation.

There's also this school in West Lafayette that is borderline top 10 as we speak and their coach has a top 10 recruiting class coming in again in 2010.

The Illinois 2011 class looks to be absolutely loaded. Weber could land 4 or 5 in-state kids, and there would still be several other top 100 type kids to go elsewhere. The connection is the Mac Irvin AAU program, which will apparently have two of Illinois' 2010 commits (Jereme Richmond and Crandall Head) for at least a part of the summer season. Then the 2011 kids in the program include Abrams, combo forward Mike Shaw and wings Sam Thompson and Wayne Blackshear. The four 2011 kids are apparently pretty close friends and all look to be at least top 50 type prospects. All indications are that Weber is going to land a monster 2011 class to follow up very good 2009 and 2010 classes. There will still be a number of other very good Illinois goods for other schools to go after though.

There are so many top kids in Chicago alone that it makes it much easier to identify kids and offer very early, plus Weber has to be on top of this because so many other schools recruit that city. T
