How empty will TCF be next year if Tim

Rupert, coming from someone who gets laughed at

drop you on your head when you were a baby?

weekly on the other boards, I will give your personal attacks the weight they deserve.

Attack the messenger all you want, but the average Minnesota citizen does not care about Gopher Football in the least. Those that do even notice it think Tim Brewster is a clown and should have been fired a month ago.

A few of the Brewster hard liners on this board are starting to crack, but they in no way represent the views of the public, who dumped over the vat of Brewster Kool Aid some time ago.

The blind defending of Brewster on this board reminds me a lot of Wrenagade Rambler's never ending defense of Dan Monson.

How did that all turn out?

Bruininks and Maturi took a huge gamble on Brew. If he doesn't put some noteworthy wins on the board next year, they will be stepping away from the table and cashing in the chips.

They cannot afford to have TCF empty. Rest assured.

This, actually, is my biggest reason for long-term hope for the program (wow, that's pretty depressing).

In getting the new stadium, and with the attempt at seat licensing, etc., the U has basically committed to getting VERY serious about trying to consistently field a winning team going forward (whether they wanted to or not). A stagnant program like the early 90's, a half full stadium with unsold seats between the 20's would be a re-curring public relations disaster. Both pro- and anti- football types would have an absolute field day. Any time the U asked for state money, the Stadium would come up, etc...

Barring disastrous results next season, I will be withholding judgment on Brewster until after his fifth season. Overall, I agree with Schnoodler, at this point.

Re the devil you know, how I long for the days of Mason. My four tickets will be dumped and I will not buy again until this blowhard Brewster is back as a position coach where he belongs. Iowa State was a really bad team and they actually beat us. WOW!

You should become a fan of the team Mason is coaching right now.

As for the Gophers and TCF, we'll miss you.

How many Iowa fans will be sitting in TCF Bank Stadium in November? I am guessing 18,000.

Selling Brewster to the public has become an impossible task. Minnesota Football is becoming a laughing stock once again.

QUOTE]

The stadium will be close to empty, between season ticket holders cancelling their tickets or just not going. I guess we can watch once again as the Iowa fans ripp down our goal posts and actually carry them out of TCF stadium. Gopher football has become the second hardest sell in minnesota sports, only behind the T-Wolves. And they actually show signs of hope for the future. Next year you will not be able to give out tickets to games, espically late in the year. Losing your last 7 or 8 games next year will surely be the end to Brewster and hopefully Maturi. Only then will some fans return.

Wow, the 'love-it-or-leave-it" homers are really taking it to anyone who dares question renewing their season tickets. Reminds me of the hapless Republicans in the last years of Bush: agree with us 100% or we're kicking you out of the party (Colin Powell, George Buckley, etc., etc.). Pretty soon we'll be able to count the remaining 'true' Gopher fans on one hand.

Having your ticket season experience be about making friends, the gameday experience, etc., and such is great. Unfortunately that's about all Gopher fans have. But to question the 'loyalty', or say non-renewers are 'band-wagoners' is absurd. You Gopher die-hards might be interested to know that their are OTHER ways to make lifelong friends that don't involve Gopher football. There are OTHER activities that provide just as much fun as Gopher Football. If you don't believe that maybe YOU should skip a few games and get out a bit more. Gopher Football is an entertainment choice that costs money. If people don't like the product, they won't renew. Especially when the economy's tough. They will weigh the cost/benefit and make a choice. That's reality, and it's the RIGHT thing to do. I've made plenty more life-long friends through kids sports, barbeques with friends and neighbors, hunting and fishing, biking, softball team, etc., etc., etc. than I have at Gophs FB. Saturdays NOT spent at Gopher Football games would simply mean MORE time in those other pursuits. And would save me $600 bucks (way more actually, considering parking, stadium food, etc.)

Ultimately, after consideration I will be renewing. Although the thought has crossed my mind not too. If my wavering makes you feel like you are a 'superior' fan, so be it. I ain't gonna lose any sleep over it.

Wow, all that to basically say: "You're not a superior fan! I'm a superior person!" Gold, just gold. I have a new hero now, sorry St. Thomas Aquinas, you've been replaced.

How did that all turn out?

Sincere question for you: What do you think it would take to engage the average Minnesota citizen in this program?

I don't disagree with you on the lack of engagement. My father in law is a great example. At Christmas, he is wound up about Brewster. Sits down at a table and immediately says "that guy is a POS and needs to go". I ask why and he says he ruined "that quarterback", since about half the people think he ruined Weber and the other half Gray, I ask which one. He says "what do you mean which one, that kid who plays for him". I ask again which guy he is referring to, knowing full well he doesn't know who he's talking about, he's only repeating what he's heard third hand or through someone like Reusse. This goes on and on. Finally, he says, "look at what that guy at Notre Dame did, he was a recruiter, but good players don't win games". Having had a couple cocktails and knowing that we already don't like each other, I ask which ND coach he's referring to, knowing he doesn't know Weis from Kelly. He says "the guy they fired." The point is this, I don't think there is much of anything the University could do to get my father in law to buy a ticket or donate a penny, including hiring Jesus Christ (not Dungy, the real guy) himself as head coach. Sadly, I think there's a large portion of our state that is the same. If we get to a Rose Bowl, we will have fans, but they will leave ASAP if the program shows any sort of drop off or regression. So what's the answer? Do you think a 9-3 season with a new coach transforms the public? I don't, the problem with the Minnesota public (and I'm MN born and bred) is that it is unbelievably short on loyalty. Much as I hate UW and their DB fans like SFBadger, they have stayed very loyal to their program outside the complete disaster of Don Morton. We are nowhere near that sort of disarray at present. Spare me the arguments about how there is so much to do and how you are just "looking for the best way to spend my entertainment dollar". That, by definition is a front running crowd. Say that to a Chicago Cubs fan and see what kind of response you get. Sadly, our fanbase is more LA Clipper-esqe than Cubs despite the parallels we share with those two hapless franchises. Not sure even a National Championship would change it. So my question to you is what would it take to change the attitude of the Minnesota sports fan?

It'll look just like every other sports venue in the country when the program isn't winning...vacant. For an example turn on BTN right now. All we hear about is how loyal the Hawkeye fans are. Take a look at Carver-Hawkeye arena. Ghost town.

PAng for mediocrity huh? Mase had 10 years and he was 32-48 in the big Ten. This made you happy? What a moron. Brewster is bringing in talent wehaven't seen here in 25 tears and you can't wait until they are at least Jr's? Great thinking Einstein. Dump your tickets you loser.

My hope is that the ticket brokers who own about 30% of the seats around me will lose interest and I or other Gopher fans can snap them up. I will definitely buy more tickets if given the opportunity. Thank you, Minnesotans, for being fair-weather fans.

Thanks for your input Mrs. Brewster, can we expect you and Tim at around seven this evening? Glen says bring plenty of fedda cheese.

It won't matter. The fact of the case is that there are a modicum of die hards due to lack of traditions by the move to the dome. It'll take a while to build the base. In the meantime folks will float in and out carried by the appropriate band wagon.

The dome is a weak excuse. The base was gone way before they moved to the Metrodome. Is there much of a difference between the average attendance at Memorial v Metrodome? I doubt it.

Heh, "fedda" cheese.

As I stated in another pathetic thread- I hope all you giving up your tickets because of Brew will stay gone if he turns this thing around. I have no problem with you having your opinion of Brew, but please stay away if he does better this team. You've proven your fickleness, and I think the program will be further ahead if the likes of you just stay away.

drop you on your head when you were a baby?

So, Rupy my boy, I have to tell you my head is feeling just fine.

After ten months, I just took a new look at this old thread, and I have to say it was very enjoyable reading.

I read this week about how "mean" some people were because they called out Schnoodler for his Skyline ass kicking post.

Now we all have to be nice and tolerant, but for three years, up until the South Dakota loss anyone that didn't buy swallow the Brewster BS, hook, line and sinker was attacked nonstop.

Brewsters program is quite different, he is doing much to signify his program is improving.

People like to make it out to be about the wins and losses. It's not, it's about the direction of the program and whether the program can grow to a point to produce the desired wins. Mason could not show that he could deliver that type of a program. Brewster has improved his every year. You would have to be blind or not paying attention not to see the vast improvement in talent and signs that the team will be better in the future.

Classic...

It's amazing what some have to do to make themselves feel good.

I got blasted for ripping Brewster too, but I don't feel this puerile need to dredge these threads up and crow about how right I was. All I care about now is moving forward. Try being the bigger person for once and just letting these old dogs lie rather than going so out of your way to pat yourselves on the back. No one is impressed.

I think some would rather be right than have the Gophers win.
