Head coach P.J. Fleck has a list of three attributes he wants at that position, and risk-taking is not one of them. No. 1: Catch the football. No. 2: Make smart and quick decisions. No. 3: Make explosive plays.

OK, the Gophers aren’t going to turn down their own heroic version of Maverick, but it’s not driving their talent search..

“Some put that (list) in opposite order, but we are getting the ball back,” Fleck said last week. “The last thing you want to do is flip the field (with a turnover). We’ve always been pretty good at that. But hopefully we can find that total package where we can have a guy back there for a lot of years that can make some plays.”

Quentin Redding appears to be the starting punt returner going into the season opener against New Mexico State at 8 p.m. Thursday at Huntington Bank Stadium.

Redding, a walk-on receiver, is a bit of a surprise at that spot. Instead of other skill position players on offense or a defensive back, the job is headed to a small redshirt freshman from Menomonee Falls, Wis. Listed at 5 feet 7 and 150 pounds, Redding did not see the field last season..
