If Pitino was winning conference titles or going to the Sweet 16 or Elite 8, the in-state/out-state recruiting issue would be a sidebar at best.

but - the hard cold truth is this:
the best kids in MN are choosing to go elsewhere. And the Gophers program is struggling to be competitive in the B1G. so fans who are looking for a reason why the program is struggling seize on the failure to recruit the best MN kids.

If you look hard enough, you can find examples of home-state kids going elsewhere for every D1 program.

But - the issue is that MN is producing more top-end BB talent than any time in the state's history. and most of those players do not want to play for the Gophers.

if MN was producing an equivalent number of top-end FB talent, and Fleck was not landing any of them, you can bet people would be talking about it.

The difference in basketball especially is that this is actually the norm, not the exception anymore. We can rip his recruiting justifiably, but the idea that losing in state recruits as a main reason should not carry weight. If this was the 1990's then there is more of a fair argument.

Or, if Pitino was able to recruit the same level recruits from elsewhere.

But watching top level talent leave, while welcoming the Greenlee's of the world, ain't cutting it.

It justifiably carries weight and will be 1 of the 3 top reasons he is fired.

Explain why it’s justifiable? Local recruiting is pointless. Recruiting to a system? Sure. Recruiting high character kids? Sure. Where they were born? Does not matter

If he gets fired, it’s because of his conference record, lack of post season appearances, lack of player development, and lack of donor support. Local recruiting has nothing and should have nothing to do with it

He would make a great D end for Fleck. He is not a very good basketball player.
