Gopher Graduation Success Rate Improves Again
Minnesota student-athletes have set a new graduation rate record, according the NCAA’s Graduation Success Rate (GSR) report released today.
According to the report made public Wednesday, Gopher student-athletes recorded a Graduation Success Rate of 79 percent, an increase of three points over last year’s figures and an 11-point jump from numbers released in the fall of 2006.
Minnesota’s Federal Graduation Rate was 70 percent and remains ahead of the graduation rate for all University of Minnesota students of 68 percent, according to the report.
Both the GSR and Federal figures are based on student-athletes who entered the university between 2000 and 2003, with the GSR total representing an all-time high for Gopher student-athletes since the NCAA began officially releasing graduation rate studies in 2005.
“I am very pleased to report that our Gopher student-athletes have once again made significant strides in improving our Graduation Success Rate,” director of athletics Joel Maturi said. “Academic success and degree completion are high-priority items for this department and I want to commend our student-athletes, coaches, and faculty, as well as the McNamara Academic Center staff for the commitment and hard work that went in to achieving these results. The current graduation rate trends remain positive for Gopher student-athletes, and it will remain our goal to see that those improvements continue.”
The Gophers’ exhausted eligibility graduation rate, which tracks student-athletes who finish their playing eligibility at University of Minnesota, continues to be a source of pride, Maturi added. It indicates that more than 90 percent of student-athletes who completed their eligibility as Gophers earned their degrees.
Graduation Success Rates for Minnesota’s women’s programs continue to excel. All 11 programs posted GSRs of 75 percent or better, with more than half (six) posting scores above 90 percent, including golf, tennis and volleyball, which each registered perfect scores of 100 percent.
On the men’s side, baseball, cross country/track & field, swimming & diving and tennis posted GSR figures of 84 percent or better, while football and hockey continued to show gains.
The Graduation Success Rate was created by the NCAA in 2005 to more accurately reflect actual graduation rates by including transfer data in the calculation.
The federal graduation rate used by the Department of Education, by comparison, counts all student-athletes who transfer from or leave an institution for any reason as non-graduates from their initial school, even if they leave in good academic standing and subsequently graduate from another institution.
