Stony Brook head coach Ashley Langford is in her third season on Long Island. Her first season was the last for Stony Brook as an America East member. Stony Brook’s departure to the CAA (Coastal Athletic Association) was announced during the season and the Seawolves were banned from the America East Tournament. Stony Brook and its 23-6 (14-4 conference) record settled for the WNIT.

Langford’s second season saw the Seawolves drop their final three regular season games. That collapse combined with being eliminated in the second round off the CAA Tourney left Stony Brook 18-13 (11-7 conference) home for the post season.

This season, Stony Brook’s 80 points and 9 threes per game have fueled a 5-0 start. Minnesota can expect to see the Seawolves drain these at a .366 clip.

Looking at the 5-0 start: Columbia may be Stony Brook’s best win. Here are the Seawolves winning scores, opposition and opposition WL records:

(41-86) Delaware State 0-5 lost to Temple, Drexel, Richmond, Hofstra and Stony Brook

(61-82) Le Moyne 1-5 lost to Colorado State, Colorado, Stony Brook, Southern Cal and BC. Defeated U Mass Lowell

(55-68) Holy Cross 2-3 lost to BC, Stony Brook and Villanova. Defeated Brown and U Mass Lowell

(63-76) Maryland Eastern Shore 2-3 lost to Georgetown, Virginia and Stony Brook. Defeated George Washington and Washington Adventist (and you thought Le Moyne was obscure).

(73-89) Columbia 2-4 lost to Stony Brook, Duke, Georgia, and Florida. Defeated Seton Hall and Towson

Should be a pretty decent game. If we are shooting and moving the ball well and playing aggressive defense, we should be able to get the win. Stony Brook is a pretty tough and aggressive team but if we handle business, we should be okay. Go, Gophers!

Stony Brook is a solid team. Two games ago they beat Holy Cross 68-55.

Loyola Marymount transfer forward Khari Clark stands out.

Like Minnesota, Stony Brook has racked up wins against bad teams -- except Minnesota is a Big Ten playing these horrible games. Last game Stony Brook beat a winless Delaware State:

Not a clean half by any means. They can get the ball inside but they turn it over. Too close entering the second half given the historical third quarter blues. Maybe this game they snap that trend?

KEEP the ball up don't bring the ball down when you are in the paint.. when you bring it down those guards can get their hands on the ball.. just keep it high and pass out..

good to see us looking for Mal on her backdoor cuts or cuts in general..

wish we would get attacking Amaya just go attack you are bigger then their guards.

End of 3rd. Leading by 5. Key period coming up. Are they going to be gassed, a swoon like past years, or probably I think finish strong. We'll find out.

Nice to see a win over a quality opponent.

I liked them getting Hart involved in the offense, Battle's 12 rebounds and 9 assists, and Holloway coming off the bench and getting 4 steals. They struggled in the 3rd quarter offensively but went on an 18-0 run to start the 4th and put the game away. Next game against Norfolk St. will be another quality opponent. A win there would be nice to see, Diamond Johnson still hasn't played yet for Norfolk St. this season.

Glad to see Hart getting some confidence on the offensive side. Seems like she has trouble hanging on to a rebound, but she seemed pretty good at defending the rim and her offensive post play was very solid. Some of her 4th Q misses just looked like she was getting a little gassed.

Good game. The opponents hung around and just when it was starting to get really nervous, Minnesota took over in the 4th quarter.. As always, Heyer finds a way to make a difference in some aspect of the game.

They extend the lead in the 4th. Nice work. So what does this tell us? I don't know. Earlier they beat NDSU comfortably after snoozing against NDSU last season. Today we didn't see late drama headed for a possible swoon.

Amazingly, they put the breaks on turnovers in the second half. Is that for real?

Coming up in January is a real test. Will Gophers be ready for it? Well, they've made progress. We still don't know enough. More to come.

Good game. The opponents hung around and just when it was starting to get really nervous, Minnesota took over in the 4th quarter.. As always, Heyer finds a way to make a difference in some aspect of the game.
and Mara struggled with her shot kind felt like she was rushing finished 4-14.. but did collect 7 rebounds and dished out 4 assists.

it's nice to see we are finally looking for Mal more either in that corner or when she cuts.. but a good game from her 4 of 6 from deep. 7 rebounds, 2 steals

Grace is like Mal always finding a way to impact the game as well. 6/8/3 and 3 steals. hopefully she will find her 3 point shot, or I wouldn't mind trying to get her offense going with some cuts to the basket as well.

Heyer moves so well and today they found her and she knocked her 3's down. Battle had a great all around game. Gonzales was held in check when guarded by Battle, but was scoring against Janay. Shorter bench today, but given that game was in doubt I understand why.

Nice to get the win. Lots of good plays and some lapses. I think the Gophers should stay on the court instead of going to the locker room for halftime. They seem to be slow in finding their way back to the court.

although the third quarter again was sluggish our defense kept us in the game. A nice 11-0 run to start the 4th sealed the game. IMHO this a game we would have lost last year..

after 10 TO's in the 1st half we did only turn it over 5 times in the 2nd half.. and one was right at the buzzer.

hopefully Mara and GG can start to find the 3 point shot again..

but man we have a few more scoring options. I do wish we would/could create some easy run outs with tip passes or deflections..

but our defense was great again today.. leaps and bounds better then the last couple years.

The Gophers women's basketball team won at home Sunday against a mid-major team that came to Williams with a perfect record and legitimate NCAA tournament aspirations.

That's the good news.

The Gophers beat Stony Brook 67-54, thanks mainly to Sophie Hart (17 points on 8-for-13 shooting) and Mallory Heyer (17 points, seven rebounds).

But there were issues.

The Gophers (5-1) allowed the Seawolves (5-1) to match to essentially match them on the boards, allowing Stony Brook to turn 12 offensive rebounds into 10 second-chance points.

The Gophers had stretches of offensive stagnation, including an 0-for-7 stretch that was the main reason why a 13-point second-quarter lead had been erased when Stony Brook tied the score at 44-44 midway through the third quarter.

To their credit, the Gophers responded. Heyer hit three three-pointers in a 18-0 run over the next 10-plus minutes that turned a tie game into a relative breeze..

Holloway and Sanders were first off the bench. Holloway became part of the regular rotation subbing in for Hart. The bench got even shorter today than last game. In the first half, I swear the scoreboard showed Grocholski with two fouls for a while

In the third quarter we ceded space on the dribble drives too often. That was corrected in the fourth.

It was fun to hear Hart scream for the ball

I just finished watching the replay.
Man Stoney Brook went on a massive drought in the 2nd half. Both teams were tied at 44, then the Gophers went on an 18-0 run over about a ten minute period.
The Gophers had a 4 or 5 minute drought as well. They got good looks, but just couldn't hit shots.

I thought Stony Brook played fairly strong defense. I think they were having trouble with our defense as well. Seemed like they were driving and flinging up shots trying to draw fouls without success. Their leading scorer, Clark, was limited in points as well as in playing time due to fouls. Gophers survived the dreaded third quarter (they have got to solve this issue). Free throw shooting was poor again. But overall, wins against competitive teams are good.
