Five former Ohio State football players involved in the 2010 "Tattoogate" scandal have asked the NCAA for their records to be restored after they were removed as punishment following the NCAA's investigation. A statement released on the Twitter account of ex-Buckeyes quarterback Terrelle Pryor requests that the NCAA reinstate the team's 12-1 record along with individual records, while mentioning the legacy of their coach, Jim Tressel.

The statement comes on the heels of the NCAA's new name, image and likeness (NIL) legislation, which allows college athletes to earn money while remaining eligible. Pryor, along with ex-Buckeyes receiver DeVier Posey, running back Daniel Herron, offensive lineman Mike Adams and defensive lineman Solomon Thomas, were suspended in December 2010 for the first five games of the 2011 season for selling items such as championship rings, jerseys and gold pants trinkets for beating Michigan. The players also received free or discounted tattoos from a local parlor.

On top of their suspensions, the players, nicknamed the "Tattoo 5," were forced to repay various amounts of money for the benefits they received.

"The affirmation of the NCAA athletes' right to make a living from their name, image, and likeness is a huge step in the right direction. Armed with the correct resources and support, we know they'll show what we felt to be true all along -- not letting athletes capitalize on what ultimately is their hard work was unjust and unnecessary," said the statement, which was co-signed by all five players.

Go Gophers!!

They should reinstate our Final Four appearance then, after UNC getting no penalty for fake classes. Only seems fair.

I think re-litigating this stuff endlessly is kinda silly.

Also what they did STILL wouldn't be allowed under NIL rules...

Not only that but it was also an unfair advantage. The other teams had to play by these rules.

Has there ever been an example of a league going back on rule changes?
Not really rule changes per se, but MLB didn't even strip Houston of their recent World Series.
NFL didn't take away New Orleans Super Bowl after bounty gate (wasn't that the year they had the bounty on Favre?) and knocked the Vikings out?

What a can of worms it would be to try to reinstate stuff.

yeah I don't get this idea at all. So the rule changes in 2021 and that should somehow make something that happened years before that Ok? If you are going to do that then you should also be able to go back and punish players retroactively for breaking a rule that didn't exist at the time but does now. Don't think anyone would be asking for that to happen.

The rules are whatever the rules are at the time. If they get changed later it shouldn't have any impact on what has happened in the past.

I can't think of any example.

It's one thing if somehow some piece of exculpatory evidence is discovered that then proves the rules at the time were not broken, but with this example, there is no doubt that Ohio State players broke the rules at the time they played. So I don't even see how it's possible.

This would be like saying "the three point shot is great, lets go back and recalculate Pistol Pete's scoring averages".

It was both the offense of benefits given by the tat 'artist' compounded by Sweater Man's lying to the NCAA about it.
Whining bitches should shut up and get on with whatever lives they have.
