Texas athletic director DeLoss Dodds has made it clear that he's not ruling out any scenario when it comes to the prospect of joining the Big Ten, staying in the Big 12, or even taking the Longhorns to independence.

"It's not something we have to think about," said Dodds regarding a potential move into the Big Ten should it expand to 16 teams, creating a super-conference. "It's something we are thinking about.

"If we have our way, we're never going to get caught in a situation where we're not part of something that's really viable nationally. If that's the way the worlds goes, then we'll go in that world."

Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick thinks similarly.

"You've got to think about it and evaluate it," he said, "and make sure you don't wind up with a different division of college football all of a sudden. DeLoss and I have a similar perspective."

In a perfect world for Notre Dame, the Fighting Irish would keep their independence. The Longhorns would stay in the Big 12. But sweeping change could shake those worlds up.

As for the possibility of Texas joining Army, Navy and the Irish as an independent football school, DeLoss Dodds says he's considering that, too.

"We've had those conversations," said the Longhorns' A.D. "We've thought about it. It's a possibility, but it's not something we're thinking about seriously. You could do it with football. It hurts basketball badly unless you find a conference. It's got a lot of flaws."

Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe intends to set a deadline for Texas to commit one way or the other by the start of the 2010-2011 school year.
