ESPN Uni Watch - Gopher White Helmets are the headline item

The Gopher equipment Twitter account has tweeted that they will be wearing white helmets, maroon tops and YTD pants.

I don't get all the fury over our "constantly changing uniforms". This has not, nor will it be an Oregon, Ok St, or Baylor situation, in which any color seems to be in play. Our uniform options are the two school colors and white. Last I check, every option, save for the gold over maroon (which happens to be my favorite) has been worn by the team at some point in their history. What's the problem? When these unis were unveiled, it was stated they were a blend of new and traditional. In my opinion, our unis, including the white helmet, do this wonderfully.

Gopherprof, somebody is getting their history messed-up again!

I'll never understand why every time a White Helmet idea comes-up people keep acted as if it's new and different when it was worn by the Gophers back in the Eisenhower and Kennedy Administration. ;)

The new white Minnesota helmets are a throwback of sorts, or at least an homage to the 60s Gophers teams that wore white lids with numbers on them. (UM football teams have worn white more recently, but not with numbers adorning the side.) The number appears on one side, opposite the school’s trademark “M” logo done in gold-outlined maroon. A maroon stripe runs down the center as well — featuring the brick pattern seen on Minnesota’s other lids — contrasting the solid-white, while a matching maroon facemask rounds out the look.

Since we are the home team in this game, a look from the 60s with marroon jerseys with gold letters and white pants would be perfect with the white helmets!

i like them. i understand why some people do not. there is a sense that the flashy new uniforms are nontraditional, but that is what the players like and they are wearing the things.

also, the traditional look flies with helmet schools because they are helmet schools. just because minnesota looked like usc in the early part of the last decade doesn't mean that look is iconic of the gopher program. i read recently about a recruit who said that he didn't know anything about the gophers except that their uniforms looked like usc's. that should tell you something about the perception of the iconic look of the maroon on gold. if there is an iconic look out there that golden gophers could seize and make their own, while also being traditional, it is the all-gold look.

I absolutely LOVE the white helmets. Not sure about the look on either the gold or maroon jerseys, but whatever.
